Power trim switch will not trim motor UP

I have a 1978 VIP ski boat with a Mercruiser Model 228 (GM 305) and the power trim switch will not trim the motor up. I can trim the motor down, but not up. Until recently the trim up worked. When I bought the boat I knew that the trim limit switch had been bypassed to avoid costly repiar charges, but since the trim up and down both worked I didn't think this was a problem. Could the wiring be bad between the switch and trim solenoid ? Could it be a bad Up switch ? Could it be a bad solenoid ? Any help on troubleshooting my problem or repairing it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Again !

matt-start with a new solenoid...prox $15...better yet get two and replace both(they're like tennis shoes- if one goes, the other's not far behind ! )

Unplug the harness that comes from the control at the pump. There should be 3 wires that go into the plug. Jumper two of them with a paper clip or something. One is the hot, one is the down and one is the up. If it goes up and down back at the pump with the jumper method your solenoids are good. At that point your wireing or control switch has a problem. I have been chaseing the same issue but mine works all the time until I get in the water and run for a while. I even replaced the pump which came with new Soleniods. I still have not be able to find the issue but I think it is either the wiring or the control switch.

I just had the same problem on my 1986 Alpha One. It is the limit switch which only allows the drive to go up so far. Using the trailer control, which bypasses the limit switch, I can raise the drive. Given the age of my boat, I'm probably not going to replace the limit switch-just use the trailer button for up trim. Good luck.
