Need answers please!

I posted this once already but did not get much response. Hope to get more info this time. I have an 87 35" Egg Harbor with Crusader 350 inboard motors and my exhast hoses in the engine room keep breaking open on he top. It had happened one before but i figured it was just old hose and have replaced both hoses. With less than 10 hours of run time on the new hose both of them burst in the same day. It was so bad that it choked the engines and had to make patches out of beer cans and duct tape. It looks as though it bust outward but how do you get enough pressure on a 3" exhaust hose? If anybody could tell me a possible cause or even better a solution it would be great. E-mail me at surfer23505@yahoo.com if you have a relative idea of certainty about whats going on. The sooner i get this fixed the sooner i get back to fishing. Thanks much!

Re: Need answers please!

Just some thoughts:

A restriction somewhere in the exhaust maybe? Wrong type of hose? Engine movement causing flexing? If a restriction is causing high back pressure it would also affect performance. Hows it running? Do both exhausts run into one collector? Might be the first place to look for a problem.

Aldo

P.S. You know you got a big boat when you can say 'Engine Room' :)

Re: Need answers please!

My guess would be your boating in salt water, so it may be possible that exhaust exit are partly blocked with sea growth, or there is a bad engine mount causing excessive flexing, or you have a bad blocked exhaust riser causing restricted flow and getting the hoses to hot, another thought is if not using spirel core hoses and have long runs of strait rubber hose they will sag and kink causing a restriction, then burst, of course these are only my thoughts. Surfer I just saw a reply on a another post from you.. not cool I was about to defend you of BMDODGE's comment, so I actually have editted this post to change my reply, If you want respect on this board then you must show it, we don't care what boat you own we come to the board for the same reasons. BMDODGE if you read my pre editted reply I apologise.

Re: Need answers please!

Dude it was late and i was a little out of it. Sorry if i offended you guys. please accept my deepest apologies. I did not think people would take it so seriously. Also i did not understand what bondo mean and later asked for clarification. i did not know that a broken mount could do that. Also there was no broken mount and was trying to get as many angles on the situation as i could and my first post was bumped to the second page and not getting anymore replies. Once again i am sorry.

Sorry for my earlier rude post, but dose anyone know where i can check to make sure i am using the right hose. It is about a 6 foot run.

Re: Need answers please!

Surfer,

You say that the hoses burst open on the top. Is that the top only?

Do the edges of the burst look burned or has the rubber turned powdery?

If so, it may be that you are not getting enough water flow through the hoses. Thus, only exhaust would be touching the top of the hose with the water (cooling) settling in the bottom of the hose.

Re: Need answers please!

6 ft per motor? Has the exhaust been modified? Sound like a lot of rubber for exhaust use.

Can't find bondos' earlier suggestions apart from 'engine mount'.

Aldo

Aldo,

Didn't catch the length. Good eye.

That is a long run for rubber hoses. I think they're overheating.

Re: Need answers please!

Dunaruna, that is only a guess i dont remember the exact mesurment. It might be less i am probably exagerating, i am not good at length guesses. They are V-8's and the inside Cylinder exhaust hose has to go all the way from the side of the motor facing the middle of the boat to the back corner where it goes out. I'll get back to you on the eact length as soon as i can get down there again.

Re: Need answers please!

Thanks all for your comments. it seems as though a blocked riser stoping the flow of water seems to be the general concesious amoung every body. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Need answers please!

thanks to all that lent there advise and it seems as thought the risers were indeed clogged and i hope the replacement of these will solve the problem. Thanks again to those who offered up there thoughts on this topic.
