Re: Turbo 470 pics

looks like a neglected bomb. I especially like the USCG approved inline fuel filters and hoses. if somethng like that showed up at my shop I would park it across the street and wipe my finger prints off the engine box.
goes to show that a get ur done aint always a do it right.

Re: Turbo 470 pics

Thanks for posting those. The fuel system is being rebuilt as we speak (when it isn't raining). Being a turbo person, my first concern was not seeing a waste gate. I was calculating how fast the boat would sink after the bottom half of both engines punched out the botom of the boat from to much boost. They put a pressure relief valve on the carb box as a waste gate. with all the rain in So. Cal I have had very little opportunity to really spend time with this since I bought it.

Re: Turbo 470 pics

hello
workwith it and fix all the obvious problems andyou should have fun. but the previous owner kinda neglected it. I dont know about all but the 470's I had apart have open deck cylinders. had head gasket issues that got worse as HP was increased. keep the boost down or you will see what an open deck block looks like.
so keep it cool and keep the topside dry :)
someplace on the net are the specs for USCG fuel lines. there are a few exceptions to the non-flxable lines between the pump and the carb. butrubber and hose clamps are a strict no no.
see tha trusty inline filter? if it leaks while running your first indication may be when someone says, man look at all the smoke from the engine room vents :) .

Re: Turbo 470 pics

For the fuel filters I bought the Racor marine water seperator filters. I have to mail order fuel hose. Nothing around here. I am in Santa Maria. Most of my boating is out of Port San Luis with trips to Santa Barbara or Ventura to launch. I had a lot of experience sailing and jet boats but the big ocean power boats are new. The boat is a 79 Thunderbird cuddy with VHF, fishfinder/loran the twin mercs, new props that were still in the box. The boat is in excellent shape. The electrical needed some work but nothing serious. It is on a 3 axle roadrunner trailer. Pulls like a dream. I only paid $5000 for it.

5k for a cuddy thats in nice shape aint bad. if the 470's give to much problems a pair of 3.0 or 4.3's will slipin nicely. looks like the turbo install was some type of kit. just be careful with the boost if those motors are open deck.

Re: Turbo 470 pics

As many bad things that I have heard about the 470 problems, I'm sure I will run them till the die and slip in something better. I'l check into the 3.0 and 4.3 setup one of these days soon and start planning. I just go back from a drive to Vegas to check out the Bass Pro store. Cost me a $1000 to get out of that store. Too much stuff, too little money.

Re: Turbo 470 pics

hey
dont get me wrong
the 470's were tough little boogers.
just had some quirks. the hamonic balancer/altenator was a great idea. seems the anganeer did not realize that sometimes boats get wet.
the open deck was problematic if any part of the cooling system degraded. it was a bean counter decision to discontinue it. ford was pulling out of the marine market and the 4.3 V6 would do more better.
