Hour Meter Tie In

I want to install an hour meter on my 5.7 merc. but I only want to register when the engine is actually running, not the whole time the key is on. Thought about tying into the oil pressure switch but its the wrong circuit. Can I tie into the output side of the alt. or does that cycle on and off? Any other ideas?

There was a post awhile back on this subject,2-3 months ago. I think the consnsus was that it was a waste of time....
