Have a slight seepage from the shaft seal on the engine water pump. Do you generally replace the entire water pump or can the shaft seal be replaced.

Curious about the water pump, what would the difference be between a marine water pump and a regular car water pump? Do they use some better seals or have something to prevent from corrosion due to salt water?

Bski..... Yes they're made out of stainless steel,& have brass impellers. An auto pump will fit but won't lastan hour in salt water......

If you are running a freshwater cooling system you can run an automotive pump. Just another reason to go closed cooling. The money you save on automotive pump will help offset the price of the heat exchanger, hoses, pump, and antifreeze. Lets see. It costs $40.00 for auto pump and $90 for the marine pump. After you replace the pump 10 times you have paid for the freshwater system.
A boat is a hole in the water..............

OLDSEDDIE,
Not a bad way to go depending on how long you are keeping your boat. We have 9 full seasons on our current craft. If I go closed system and wait for the reduced cost of the auto style water pump to pay the diff....Let's see 9 years per pump, times 10 pumps to break even, plus the given age of the boat....be about 99 years by my calc. (lol) Just kidding!!! If we were salt water boaters I may have given that a go. But the only salt our boat sees is the salt we spill on deck when we season our food. Were fresh water kind’a boaters.

That's kind of what I expected, they are built with the quality to withstand the salt water.

I too only boat in fresh water. The marine quality unit may outlive the automotive pump even in the fresh water. I guess it comes down to how often you need to replace it.

At least in a crunch you can go to the local auto parts store and get one.
