I'm replacing impeller and I'm trying to align drive shafts. Do I need a special tool? How hard do I need to turn the shift shaft to put in forward gear? Also, boat was in neutral when I removed lower unit...is this a problem?

It is a mercruiser. I looked at the link. It looks like we are doing everything right, except when the lower unit is put back in place with bolts snugged up, the throttle is stuck in forward position.

Come on guy, part with some information. What engine and drive do you have, and what year.
If you have an Alpha drive, you probably have a bent piece rigth now, if it's a Bravo nothing bent. But it's a real pain to explain something and you then say, "I don't have that"

1971 Inline 6 with a mercruiser outdrive. Hope this helps. Not sure how to tell if it is Alpha or Bravo drive.

Re: Impeller replacement help

Right now the upper unit is in forward and the lower unit seems to be in forward because the prop won't spin counterclockwise, and I have about 1/2 inch before I can close it up tight. Should I pull spark plugs to spin the flywheel?

You probably have a bent shiftshaft from removing the drive without it being in forward.
Look under the drive where the upper and lower shiftshafts come together. If they are bent you will not get it together.

See steps 5 and 6 at this link
http://mercstuff.com/alpharemoval.htm

I was going to ask how you got it off in neutral. Did you really have to force it to get it off?

The shiftshafts do not appear to be bent. The upper and lower fit together. I think the problem is with the splines lining up.

How hard do I turn lower unit shift shaft to put into forward gear. Just hold into place while turning prop counter clockwise. How will i know it's fully into forward gear. Will it make a click sound.

Turn the prop counter clockwise while turning the shift shaft. When it point forward, that is all the way into forward gear. Make sure the shifter is in forward. If the prop gets turned clockwise a little, the shiftshaft will move from the forward position, It MUST stay in forward.

Upper and lower units seem to be in forward. half inch to go. do I tighten bolts to pull tight or should drives pull together by hand . just don't want to mess anything up at this point. "Rookie"

If your within a half inch I think you must have it. It wont push the rest of the way?

Re: Impeller replacement help

They should go together without being forced. If the nuts can be started on the two side studs you should be ok. The upper will be in forward at the helm, the lower as Don S. said. Make sure the lower shift shaft is engaging to the top shaft, you may have to turn the prop counter clockwise to get them to engage.
