Found out from my uncle that his neighbor tried to give him her boat and trailer. 19ft bowrider (350 chevy)? he's getting me stats tonight. The boat was very well maintained by the marina it was kept at and was garaged otherwise...it was just never used. 2 years ago we had a bad hurricane, caused a lot of flooding and the boat suffered through it tied to a tree. It has not been started since and she just wants it gone. Ran great before this, but hasn't been started. I'm planning on worst case right now of an engine replacement...what else could I be getting into? How do I prepare the engine for start up or attempt to start? I'm a boat idiot so dumb it down for me =).

it really depends on what outdrive it has and how old it is

many of the really old ones are beyond help

and if the boat has any wood rot that is a whole different nightmare

tommays

The boat is about a '96 in good cosmetic condition from what I hear. So hopefully that will eliminate a lot of problems.

If it is free, take it home! Check the floors for soft spots and stuff like that. I would empty the gas tank, change oil, new plugs....things like that, check outdrive oil. IF you want while the plugs are out squirt a little marvel mystery oil in each one. Put a fresh battery in it and see what happens. Good Luck....might a hell of a deal.

Are there any corrosion precautions I should take? I guess I'll have to post more when I actually know more.

Unless the engine was flooded with water or water got into the carb and intake manifold like mine was when I got it for free, I wouldn't assume you need a new engine. I was even able to get mine up and purring like a kitten with a goo dcleaning and tune up, with a few new parts.
