Ok I have A 77 marlin with an omc 3.0 inboard with an electric shift outboartd. Was out on the lake today and was just barley giving it throtle when all of a sudden bang the boat stopped moving. At first I thought it was the prop but I then realized it wasnt. Prop was still there put it into gear and you can still spin the prop. As I was sitting there I also noticed that the temp started to go up from the usuall 160 so i turned the motor off.Got it back home and started it up and heard alot of rattleing coming from the outdrive. My question is would this be A big problem to take it apart ot not? Any advice would be aprreciated. Thank you...

Re: Big problem

i would look here at the marine mall for a seloc manual for your year OMC

i would get and orginal but thats going to hard to find

it sounds like you have some problems that are going to require a manual

the simplest thing you can do is drain the gear oil and see how it looks

a lot of drives dont get filled with enough oil and get dammaged

tommays

Re: Big problem

Ok I pulled it apart and found out that it was the upper case of the outboard. Put it in gear and the propeller turns ,works like its suppose too.Now I am trying to figure out how to take the upper case apart.Took the lower case off and is sitting next to the boat. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks

Re: Big problem

takeing it apart goes beyond what most DIY people will do a lot of special tools needed to do it right

if the manual is leaveing you confused thats not a good sign

BUT some people do it its your call

tommays

Re: Big problem

Maybe I'm just beating A dead horse on this one.
Seems like no one in my area even works on them. So its time to part ways with it and find another boat.

Re: Big problem

Well just to let everyone know I managed to figure out what was wrong with the upper gear case. The water pump shaft spines were just worn away.Thats what happens when you join to metals together that shoudnt be put together. One appears to be A harden steal and the other not ...Located someone who has the tools to take it completeley appart and put all the new parts into it and should have it back to me by weds...
