Re: OMC 800 outdrive worm gear removal

There is gear attached to the tilt worm gear that fits into the clutch gear. Thats what holds the worm gear in. Once you remove the clutch, and get some leverage on the brass clutch gear, the worm gear and the other gear (sorry, the name escapes me) will slide right out.

Re: OMC 800 outdrive worm gear removal

Jh19
I appreciate your continued thoughts on this problem but I just don't see the picture clearly (probably something to do with my age)
When the system is working properly, the tilt motor drives the worm gear which in turn, drives the clutch assembly which drives the small gear driving the outdrive up and down. Now,if the outdrive is disconnedted from from the small gear which raises it,and I rotate that gear counterclockwise, why wouldn't the whole clutch assembly try to rotate but since being prevented from doing so,by the worm gear, press against the worm gear and try to drice it out of the housing?

Originally posted by Bob197:
Thanks for the "on the road response".
After the 3 screws are removed from the worm gear retaining cover and the cover removed, there's a round metal piece that seems to hold the worm gear assembly in place. The manual calls it "bushing and retainer".This appears to be the thing thats preventing the worm gear and shaft from being removed from the housing. With clutch in place, they indicate that rotating the quadrant gear would push the worm gear shaft out since the clutch gear would be pushing against it allowing the whole "cotton pickin" assembly to be removed.
OK, got my bearings ...

Using their method, or grabbing the tilt gear with channel locks... covered with a rag, being careful not to knick it up and turning it counter cloclwise should force the whole assembly out. There is nothing holding that bushing in once the cover plate is removed.
If there is corrosion, it may require PB blaster to loosen up.

Re: OMC 800 outdrive worm gear removal

Keith,Jeff and all,

Thanks, the bushing holding the worm gear is out.Since I couldn't get the drive gear off(to get the clutch out), I put the moon gear back on as suggested with the outdrive set at a 45 degree angle so I could jar it easier.Soaked the bushing with WD 40,CRC,LPS,and vinegar overnight .Put heat on it with a propane torch but no way would the bushing come out.I then made a decision. That bushing was going to come out if I had to drill, tap and hook a makeshift slide hammer to it. Instead,I put a cement block under the drive
to act as a fulcrum and a 3 foot board as a lever to get some horsepower on the sterndrive .Ten shots with my foot and the bushing popped out (It wasn't corroded badly, but just enough lock it in place).
This entire shaft and motor problen resulted from a sticking outdrive (down)even with the bearings cleaned and greased. The 50 amp fuse blew first, then the tilt switch got stuck ( you know--- the usual stuff with a 39 year old boat.)I was cycling it to be sure it was ok before launching when the shaft broke. Sill working on that sticking part, but should now be in the water in two weeks or so.Got new tilt motor, shaft, and transom boot, gaskets etc. on order.

Thanks again,

Bob

OMC 800 3.8L Tilt Motor & outdrive worm gear removal

OMC 800 3.8L Tilt Motor & outdrive worm gear removal

I had issues with the out drive not coming up or going down:
The outdrive would click (solenoids) and nothing would happen.
Sometimes it would go up, sometimes not same with going down...

see this site for parts info:
OMC Stern Drive Intermediate Housing Group Parts for 1984 3.8 L 384SPMRCRJ Stern Drive

I checked the oil in the tilt motor and it was milky (like carmel milk) (water in the oil make it look like that)

I pulled the clutch pak cover (part #38 & 39) and sure enough milky oil

I removed the Retaining cover (#26, 27)

I removed the spring clip holding the gear on (part #64)
BUT USED A FLOOR JACK TO SUPPORT THE OUT DRIVE 1st!!

I slid off the gear (part #63)

Then slid out the clutch pak...See red lines on attached parts diagram and schematic
it came out very easy (see photo)

Whats left is The BIG BRASS WORM DRIVE GEAR (part #62) (gold circular item in photo)
This would not come out - its held in by the worm drive gear itself.

To get this out I used a rag and opened up my channel locks as wide as they would go, til they fit in the slots of the brass gear and rotated it CLOCKWISE...

This will force out the retainer bushing. (part #82 ) and the worm gear (part #81 ) as well as the shaft (part #46) and nylon washer.

Now Clean up the parts - REPLACE SEALS (part #2) Replace (at a minimum) O-ring (part #36) and grease the snot out of it all and see if that helps - I will be replacing my tilt motor too if needed. (Part #37)

Heres a trick - INSTALL STUDS in place of bolts - this will make it easier to replacing the motor.
