Each time I start my 96 Larson 3.0 I/O Volvo/Penta I have to snap the neutral button and move the throttle just a little forward - and it starts right up. I always have told myself it must be normal as the engine is carbed and not fuel injected. Idle speed is good and it idles fine - but it needs that little throttle to start. Is this normal?

Glad to have Don S back on board.

Mark

Re: starting question

Ayuh,.................

On My boat,....
I use the neutral throttle over-ride,+ Pump it to WOT Twice, And set it just above Idle,+ Hit the Key........
Then readjust after it Starts.........

It takes a stroke of the throttle to Set the Choke on a Carbed motor........... ;)

Re: starting question

Is that at cold start or at all starts? I do what you describe at cold start and it starts right up. But at normal operating temps I always have to give it a little throttle to start. It's kinda like you used to do on the carbed cars - give the accelerator a tap and it cranked right up. Not a too big of an issue but the truth is I was wondering if this could also be the cause of the engine not wanting to start at all in cold temps?

Thanks Again,

Mark

Re: starting question

The slight above neutral throttle setting is normal with age. 2 reasons. Carbon build up in everything now needs just a bit more to start. Or cables have stretched or loosened and need readjustment. Do a Sea Foam engine cleaner job on it. From auto parts store, FIRST. Then a cable adjust, IF needed.
