OK, FIRST QUESTION I HAVE FOR YOU GUYS. MAXUM 1988 MERCRUISER 3.0 LITRE i/o ALPHA 1 OUTDRIVE, I RECENTLY PULLED IT OUT OF THE WATER AND ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I SAW THAT WAS DISTURBING WAS A LOOSE WIRE HANGING OFF THE TOP OF THE OUT DRIVEFROM SOME CIRCULAR METAL CAP. THER IS AN IDENTICAL WIRE ACROSS FROM IT THAT IS ATTACHED TO A CIRCULAR METAL CAP ON THE TOP OF THE DRIVE AND GOES INSIDE THE BOAT AND INTO THE HYDRAULIC WIRING. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE WIRE AND CAN I RE-ATTACH IT BUY GOING THROUGHT THE WALL OF THE BOAT WITH A PIECE OF WIRE AND RECONNECTING?
PROBLEM 2: THERE IS A LEAK IN THE HOSE THAT GOES FROM THE HYDRAULIC PUMP TO THE TRANSOM AND TO THE PISTION. THE CONNECTION IS UNREACHABLE FROM THE INSIDE, ITS ALL THE WAY UNDERNEATHE THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. IS IT A BAD IDEA TO CUT THE AREA OF THE HOSE THAT IS LEAKING OUT AND REPLACE IT WITH BACK TO BACK HOSE BARBS AND A NEW PIECE OF HOSE? OTHERWISE HOW CAN I ACESS THE CONNECTION?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.
JOE NY

I agree with Tommays. With a single 3.0liter it might be possible to replace the hydraulic line without pulling the engine if the boat manufacturer gave you decent access(if it had twin big blocks...forget about it).

The wire is from the tilt/trim limit switch and they break all the time. I've never figured out why they can't design that better, but oh well.

Replacing the trim sensor requires a bit of work- unless you are mechanical, you'd best go with a shop on that one.

Been there, down that, have the scraped knuckles to prove it.

UFM82

is it ok if i spliced a wire onto the existing piece and ran it trough a hole in the wall of the hull?
I figured out how to get the hyd hose out. Is there any online store that anyone would reccomend, the store price is like $50 a hose.
joe

you really dont want to make anymore holes in your boat

there are allready to many and splices that get wet cause all kinds of other problems

buy the time you pay shipping and handeling on a small part the saveings tends to be small

on the more common wear parts theres a lot of after market parts that you can save money on

if you do a google search you come up with plenty i buy my merc parts local so i cant say who would be good

tommays

Tjoseph, Hydraulic line must be used between the pump and the cylinders, bite the bullet and spend the fifty bucks. Use only an exact replacement or you will be sorry in the long run.

You might find a used one at a local marina. It would be better to use a new one though. Get the one for your boat as it will be easier in the long run
