Does anyone know about how much it should cost to replace the impeller on a 1986 Bayliner with a 2.3L Volvo engine and a 275 Penta outdrive? I am new to the whole boat maintenance thing. Thanks!

Are you going to do it yourself or take it to the shop to get it done?

Re: Replacing Impeller

Depends on how difficult it is to fix. Is it something a person with a general amount of mechanical ability can do, or should it be taken to a shop? What are the chances I am going to screw something important up when trying to change it? If it is not too expensive I would probly take it to a marine shop. Do you know how much it would run at a Marine shop, and how much the impeller would be by itself? Thanks for helping!

Probably 2 hours labor. So, depending on the labor rate at your shop, you're looking at that, plus approx. $15 for an impellor, and they will also probably charge you for changing the gear lube out for your outdrive. I'd say around a $175-$200 job at a mechanic.

Oh.. and chances of screwing something important up when trying to change it? Very high, if you are new to boat maintenance. I can change out a starter, alternator, raw water pump, power steering pump, but I would never think about disassmebling my lower unit.

I would buy a Solec manual for your motor, read up on how to change it and decide it you think your capable.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Greatly appreciated. I will probably take it and have it done at a marine shop.
