Re: Won't start

What I meant on the first one was to check voltage between 30 and 86. This would indicate you have both power and ground in the same check.
If you had the ground wire of your meter on the negative terminal of the battery and tested the 30 wire, you still wouldn't know if the black wire (86) was any good. By checking with a the VOM with a lead in each terminal you verify both are good at the same time.

I have voltage between 30 and 86 and
voltage on 85 when cranking.

I jumped 30 and 87 and no sucess.

When cranking I also have power on one terminal of the fuel pump connector.

Since I have both you suggested replacing the relay but is seems the pump is also bad?

Re: Won't start

If you jumpered 87 to 30 and the pump is no go then either the pump is bad or there's a bad conenction or it's missing the ground.

Re: Won't start

One more test I placed the positive lead of VOM in yellow/red wire on the fuel pump connector and the Negative lead of VOM in the black wire of the fuel pump connector with the connector disconnected. When cranking there was voltage with the relay in place. With the relay removed no voltage.

Re: Won't start

Remove the pump connector and jumper the 87 and 30 terminals again. Check for power and ground at the pump connector. If both are good, you need a pump.

Re: Won't start

Success!!!!

New fuel pump did the trick, thanks to everyone who helped. With special thanks to Don S for the detail schematic and test procedure and Fred for the suggestion which led us down the fuel starvation path.

The boating season in NY is already too short as it is without having down time due to mechanical problems. Now I just hope the weather holds for the weekend because I'm going boating!

Re: Won't start

Good Day, All!
Grateful for the info, as I am having same prob with 94 Sunbird Corsair 180 SL (OMC Cobra 4.3L 2Bbl). Removed pump, applied 12v to it, and can feel it run. No voltage output from F.P. Relay. Problem is intermittent, will run for 2 days just fine, then next day will start & die, float bowl runs dry after a few shots from accelerator pump. An hour later, it may be fine. I really just have 2 questions: 1. Is there any input to the relay (oil pressure switch, etc), that can occasionally cause symptoms that appear to indicate faulty relay? Or is relay most likely at fault?
2. Is there a commonly available equivalent to the OMC relay? (P/N 3850403). Appears to be similar to ones used for electric cooling fans on automobiles. Not trying to save $$ (List price is $16), but have a long drive to nearest dealer.
Thanks much for any help you can provide!! -Jim.

Re: Won't start

Thanks for the advice.
Purchased new OMC relay, problem solved!
I will start a new thread to advise others, replacement part was superceded by a Johnson/Evinrude P/N. It was mfd by Tyco, and has their P/N on it as well. May be a cross-ref somewhere to a more common/widely available part.
Happy boating,
-Jim.
