Merc 140 Ignition problem

This is my first boat. I have a 1989 Invader V177 w/3.0L Merc S/N OB450801 that was purchased after being in storage for 15 years. It has 35 hours total, all of which was put on in '89. I have replaced many siezed, corroded parts and am ready to start it up for the first time but there is no spark at the plugs. I replaced the cap, rotor, points (set at 0.022"), plugs, starter, alternator etc and have a fresh battery and cleaned all electrical terminals on the engine. I can get a spark to ground from the coil wire when I crank the engine but I'm not sure if it is weak or not, seems thin and yellow in the sunlight. I can also induce a spark if I push the cut-out switch momentarily off and on with the ignition on. The coil is original though and there is 12.74 volts available on the + side of it. Any suggestions on what to look for or test?

Is it me or have I stumped the experts. Still trying to get this boat started.

You should have a bright blue spark. Could be the coil, did you check the wires with an ohm meter?

How many volts did you have on the + side of the coil while cranking? On my 160 Merc it would go to zero while I was cranking it. Turned out to be the starter solenoid.

Thanks, it was the coil. I borrowed an automotive one off a friend. Although I can get the engine to start now, it won't idle unless the choke plate is almost closed, even after it's warmed up. Looks like I'll be tearing apart the carb next.

Darren, I have the same engine. By some strange chance before you put a different coil in it did the engine crank but not fire?

Yes, I had a bit of a spark from the coil wire but nothing at all from the spark plugs.

The boat I'm working on has been winterized since fall of 2001. I have replaced the same parts as you have and ended up where you were at. I must be on the right track. Thanks
