Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

Don.........I hate to ask why...........but why is it not good to run it full down? Why would this have anything to do with the "bogging" problem?

And yes I have been running it full down, maybe a little up.

Newport....the bottom should not have to be cleaned if it is painted with antifouling paint......which it is.

Because, running it full down makes the bow plow through the water instead of planing.
Go try it again, this time start trimming it up after you get to 3200 rpm. Keep an eye on the speed at the same time. When the rpm starts going up and the speed starts going down you are trimmed to high. Bring it down till you have max rpm and max speed.

On your bottom paint, it keeps barnicals and shells from growing, not the green slime that will slow you down.

Between the slime and the down trim, I would bet your boat runs fine.

Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

tony your boat is near the max size for a 5.7 so anything that keeps it from planeing will bog it down

if i go out on my 3.0 with 6 people and use my 19" prop it will get kind of hafe aZZ up on plane and just kind of get stuck in the 3000 rpm range drop it down to a 17" and it will plane in 8 to 10 seconds and then i have to be carefull not to over rev it on the top end

no matter how i am useing the boat i need to trim up ASAP or it just plows the bow

i kept wet sanded micron 22 on my J-24 sailboat ONE week in the slip with out a scrub would cost me and easy 10-15 percent in speed and really kill the acceleration between tacks

tommays

Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

Well, Just got back from the garage, pulled the leg and checked for anything obstructing the exhaust... nothing there at all. I also pulled my prop to get a better look in the hub and all is well. Of course, I tore the gimbal gasket putting it back together so it looks like I won't be boating tomorrow. My exhaust seems good too. It always has been blowing well and free. Two holes in the bottom of the gimbal as well as through the hub of the prop (3.0 4cyl.) Not sure what else to look at.? I wish I could find out what this problem is.

NIck, that's what I am afraid of, pulling the boat out of the water and then finding nothing!

Did you check fuel pump pressure at 3200 when the bog happens, not sitting still in neutral or at idle. If the pump is weak it could show good pressure at idle but not under load. It's not all about pressure it has to provide enough flow at high speed AND high load. It takes very little fuel to run an engine that is not doing work.

I thpought of the fuel pressure.......I might need to check it again at speed and load.

I really don't think it's fuel pressure. The mixxture is too rich at speed and/or load. It think I am describing this correctly FreeBee? This is the case for me. It is TOO MUCH fuel, not too little.

Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

If it is not getting too much fuel at low speed I don't see how or why it could get too much at high speed. Plus he changed the carburator so that would rule that out. Most fuel related bogs are caused by too little fuel or too much air to soon. Looking at all that was done fuel starvation from a weak pump is all that is left.
I worked on a motor home once that suddenly would not run over 50 MPH, no missing just wouldn't go any faster. The several shops had worked on it. Tune up,new plugs, wires, etc. Problem was fuel starvation from a weak pump.

Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

ntheyer suggested running the boat on the edge of where the bog occurs, then closing the choke manually to see what happens........this sounds like a good idea, if it gets worse: too much fuel, if it gets better: not enough.

Nick, Any luck on your end?

Any opinions on the method?

FreeBee,
I don't understand what your looking for here. You are ignoring good advise from professional techs, thinking you know better. If you really knew better you would have diagnosed the problem.

Diagnostics have to be done in a systematic way, your all over the place. Look at how much time and money you have spent on this, with no results. Stop and listen to what the pros are telling you.

The Eledbrock you stuck on there will work right out of the box just fine. Move on. Yes, check fuel pressure under load. Messing around with the choke will tell you nothing.

It's time to give up hoping for an easy fix, quit ignoring what you don't want to hear, and do what is required to diagnose and repair the problem.

Dave

Re: CARB REPLACEMENT DIDN'T WORK- I THINK I FOUND SOMETHING

How can it be low fuek pressure if I am getting too much fuel?

I just ran the boat and performed the above test and closing the choke seemed to worsen the problem. In fact I could almost feel the fuel above the secondaries. I also noticed fuel coming out of the ports that pump fuel when the accelerator pump is activated.

It sure seems to me like I am getting too much fuel and not too little.

I really need to pull the drive and check for an exhaust restiction........would that cause the above symptons? The engine not being able to breath (exhale) properly?

DUH !!!!! Read Dave's first reply in this thread, I even mentioned it as well as it being brought up in the other threads. You like Nicks suggestions because they are easy to check, of course he has the same problem on his boat and he can't get his fixed either.
