Can a tear in my large bellow around the main shaft, leak into the bilge area? Im getting about 10 gal of water in the bilge just sitting still in the water. I brought it home and ran the boat on the hose for about 10 min and could see no water leaking from the engine.

ahhh,,,yes, and it will also wash grease out of gimbal bearing and ruin it....get bellows changed and check gimball bearing for smooth movement...it should move freely with no rough spots...if its ok grease the heck out of it

Grease the gimbal right away and you may get lucky if it is fresh water you are in,and I mean grease it good.Repair the bellows right away and you may as well have the shift cable and cable bellows done as well since it will be all apart anyway. That kind of leak is the one that can sink you.Charlie

Like fender and charlie said, the bellows are the only thing between you and the bottom of the pond. I would not take a chance on the gimbal bearing, if there is any rust or pitting on the balls or races, the bearing will fail, also might as well replace the u-joints.

aftermarket marine sell a transom repair kit for $100 it includes the bearing and everything else you will need except the bellows adhesive
