Hey guys. I have a question for you. I spoke to 3 different service people today and I want your input, if you could.

1st off, let me say that this issue with the O/D (1981 400 O/D, 2.5l OMC), when it jumps, it does not come out of gear. It's like it skips. Understanding that.....

I paid $1600 for the boat. Cheap money, clean boat and interior, and well worth it until this. I got the following responses today from the techs I spoke with;
"I'll rebuild that lower for $1200"

"a gear set for that is about $700.00 plus labor, if that even fixes the problem".

"dump it".

and the best one is;

"I just sold a nice clean one last week for $800.00".

Anyway, I'm not convinced about the cause of the problem, and finding a tech willing to take a ride has proven fruitless.

Review of problem is

O/D skips at all rpm except idle (in gear).

fluid was changed after problem started.

I can spin the prop (with some effort) in gear with motor off.

I'd really appreciate anyone's input except the part about a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into blah blah blah. I am well aware of that. Thanks-Jeff

While Kagee is checking....maybe your prop is spun, try marking it with nail polish and see if the marks move after being in the water. Just a guess.

I believe that 79-81 was the hydro assist lower.

jh, just call Steve at Ryan's Marine-503 282 8807. (PDT) He has been around since the beginning of time, is a straight shoooter and knows the OMC like the back of his hand. Describe the problem and he'll have an answer. He can also tell you what it should cost to fix it. Just be up front with him and tell him you are calling from Boston.

BTW, people ship him O/D's from all over the country, including Alaska. Dealer/mechanics send him units after they have messed them up.

FYI, I just spent $1200.00 with him last summer. There was nothing obviously wrong with my unit but it was 30 y/o, never been worked on, and I was about to hang a new more powerful engine in front of it. He inspected everything, replaced the water pump and wearing waterpump shafts.

Mine, like yours is the HydroAssist. This is where you are likely to be having the problem. There is a filter screen that plugs up and does not allow sufficient oil pressure to completely shift gears. He removes the screen puts in some kind of a Cobra part. He's not likely to divulge exactly what he does so Please don't ask him. He just makes them better.

BTW, all three techs today told me no way on clutch dog. They all said if it was it would have slipped out of gear completely. You guys agree?

Any reason why I can't replace this myself? Also, the doug russell link goes back to 83, which does not list the hydro assy. Either of you know the part number or an older drawing of this model? Thanks

Thanks, I have that bookmarked, but it's drawings don't have part numbers. It does have the right pic of the O/D though. Thanks again.

Re: Kagee & or Boomer-O/D woes more info

A common "slipping" problem with the older Stringer Drive OMC's was neglect in changing the water pumps often enough and lubing the splines on the water pump shaft. Since these splines were pretty fine, they would wear away without lube and when worn down enough, they would slip or strip out.

You can see a pic of the shaft at:

http://www.sterndrive.info/800_series_water_pump_parts.html

This would cause the drive to slip? Thats interesting. The pump has not been done in a minimum of 2 years (I just got the boat in March), and I accidentally ran it up to 210 (the hose slipped off), and I did the "new boater error" of running it for 15 seconds max one day W/O water.

I planned on overhauling the pump completely in two weeks (during my vacation week).

I am really interested in this one, please, tell me more.

If the splines are the culpret, you will see right away when you split the upper from the lower.

Re: Kagee & or Boomer-O/D woes more info

i don't have one... mine is mechanical. From what i can tell, Boomer said it in his post about the screens blocking up, seems to be an issue that's common. other than that, i am not familiar with the mechanics of it all.

Re: Kagee & or Boomer-O/D woes more info

Sorry, I meant it's job. If the shifter / throttle puts the drive in gear by meshing the ball gears (the obvious split between the two systems) what does the assist do. Mechanical or hydro? Pardon my ignorance, just trying to learn more and maybe get an idea of what might be wrong.

Do you have any thoughts on the above water pump issue? Thanks
