4.3L Mercruiser Starter Problem

I have a 1997 Cobalt 190 that I bought used this April. It has a 205hp 4.3L Mercruiser with 225 hours. On memorial day I took a reasonably hard turn to stop and go skiing and then turned off the engine relatively quickly. For the first time since I owned it, the engine ran on for several seconds so I shifted into neutral to give it gas to stop the run on. Upon the attempted restart I got a couple of clunks before the starter began whining like it couldn't engage the engine. It was towed to a mechanic who replaced the starter. This temporarily fixed the problem. However, yesterday, the exact same fact pattern as above reoccurred.

In a June 3, 2003 post by Cadet Member 19783, a similar problem was discussed by someone who mentioned that GM starters use cheap plastic gears that break easily.

Any ideas on how I should deal with this problem mechanically or operationally. It seems there might be a flaw in the design of this engine and that it may be prone to happening again. I am a new boater and new member of this forum and greatly appreciate any expert advice you might have on this subjest.

Re: 4.3L Mercruiser Starter Problem

Welcome to iboats... :) Have you checked for water intrusion into your cylinders? Quick shut offs like that can gat back flow of water. Suggest you pull spark plugs and turn it over a few times. Don't forget to ground the coil. If you see water, the best you can do is change your oil, but first get all of the water out as best you can, asap... And run it alot to evaporate any residual water. Check closely for milky stuff on rocker arm covers and in oil. It may take several oil changes. When they look clean the water should be out........J

Thank you. I'll let you know what I find out. It seems like this would be happening to people all of the time when they shutoff their engines after decelerating to pickup a downed skiier.

It does happen. Just don't shut off the engine immediatly. Go to neutral and let the engine idle for a bit.

I would also check you exhaust manifold and risers for leaks, as they are 8 years and according to mercruiser they are at the end of their lives

Re: 4.3L Mercruiser Starter Problem

It looks like everyone is suspecting water intrusion into the cylinders as the cause of the problem. Based on the whining sound that the starter was making, do you think that it needs to be repaired, or will the correction of the water intrusion problem somehow fix the starter situation. Thanks again for each of your replies.

Maybe, probably. The problem is that you cannot compress water. Removing it from the equation can only help.......J

Re: 4.3L Mercruiser Starter Problem

Just talked to a guy that my brother knows that used to have a 4.3L Mercruiser. He was sure that what was happening was vapor lock. His advice was to make sure to let the engine idle for awhile before turning it off (believe me I will from now on). Also, he said that if you shut it off and engine run-on occurs that you should start it back up before it quits and vapor locks.

You guys were right. The mechanic confirmed hydrolock was the problem. He also said that my "exhaust flappers" were bad, possibly because of engine overheating from a previous owner. The exhaust flappers must be a slang name for the risers or manifolds that Cameron was referring to. Thanks again everyone.

Ayah... Exhaust flappers are bits of rubber that (partially) close off the exhaust system just below the elbow. They are designed to reduce the amount of water rushing up the system after coming off the plane (or shutting the engine down). Exhaust elbows are the bits that lives on top of the exhaust manifolds and they mix water with the exhaust gases to cool them enough not to burn rubber parts down the line.

Chris...........
