Steering kit question

I have a 115 hp johnson v4 on an alluminum bass boat. The stock steering kit is a single rack and pinion. Should I opt for the double or replace it with another single? Also any pros and cons to the teleflex no feedback systems? The boat runs right at about 50mph. Is that pushing it for a single rack and pinion setup? Any brands or kit names or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Steering kit question

My opinion.. Tops out around 50mph, a single cable would be fine.. Anymore speed and I'd go with the dual cables..

Have'nt piloted a boat with the no feedback system yet, but if the no feedback system is all they claim it is (probably is) then I think it'd be worth the few extra bucks..

I've got the no feed back system hooked up to a 150 optimax. Thought I would have to upgrade to hydraulic steering but the NFB system works great. Not sure if I'll upgrade now.

montanaman, what form would the hydraulic steering be in. Was it specifically for outboards? Do you have any web links for it?

Re: Steering kit question

I was originally looking at the Baystar system by Teleflex but it works for all 150hp outboards except the 150 Optimax. The next step is the Seastar system that works with outboards up to 300hp I believe. Both systems can be found at Overtons or Cabelas. They may also be found at this site but I haven't checked (sorry). I'm not sure if can be used on outboards and I/O's or not. I think that it says but my brain just kinda skips over the I/O part.

I have a single cable system on my 85hp Jognson and wish I would have sprung the extra cash for the NFB system due to torque steer. I just installed an NFB single cable system on my V8 I/O, but it hasn't seen teh water yet. I already like the feel on the trailer though.

Re: Steering kit question

Hi, I put a single pull cable on my Merk 150 hp, works like a dream! I also changed the gearbox to match the teleflex cable, 11', together worked great!
