Ideas on a water cannon

I'm wanting to make a water cannon and mount it under my swim deck. I have an onboard air compressor in order to use pneumatics to power it. I have several cylinders with a 7" stroke.

I would like to be able to throw a glob of water (not a stream) about 30 to 50 feet. You know for those pesky PWC's, and those that like to make a big wake in the "NO WAKE" zone.

Any ideas appreaciated. Thanks

I dunno if it's good or bad, or even where to start in making such a thing?................ But I like it... :D

Re: Ideas on a water cannon

We need the bore, stroke, and pressure requirements of the cylinders.

I have made several pneumatic "potato guns" that would be good for such a thing. There is a section of PVC pipe with a cap on one end and a valve on the other. You fill it with compressed air, and open the valve to shoot. At the other end of the valve is a barrel also made of PVC, when it's filled up with water it makes a wonderful cloud of water. :D

Mayfloat - you have been in the sun entirely too long. Bad idea! Fun to think about, but really a bad idea.

Now, there is a handheld, foot controlled sling-shot made out of surgical tubing and launches a water balloon… :D :D :D

Luv the idea, but watch out for a boat towing a jet ski at the water fight day at Lake McClure. This guy rigged up a nozzle on his jet ski. Man, that thing threw a stream! I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing in a water fight! Looked like he could swamp an average boat in no time. He had a score to settle from the year before, and I bet he settled it all right! Too wild for me.

Sounds like this project might take some serious experimentation. Should be a fun one, just be careful in the process. Safety ought to be first concern with pneumatics/hydraulics.

Rabbit, Being in the SUN? It's just now getting to the 50"s everyday. The sun hasn't been out much this year.

I'm not wanting something that going to launch a 50# drop of water. I just want a drop about the size of a ping pong ball to tennis ball size.

It would be neet to have is just under the waterline.

Pointer, The bore is about 2", the ram is 1/2 stainless, cylinder is aluminum with aluminum caps. There is two 1/4 npt ports. These cylinders are rated for 150# operating pressure. I have 12 & 24 volt solenoids also to actuate the cylinders.

I would agree that this is a receipe for trouble but in the hands of a responsible adult who knows how to play safely.

I am trying to do this while working but based on quick measurements You should throw water up to about 65 feet. But your volume will be fairly low about .25 of a gallon utilizing two cylinders at the same time... If you employ an actuator tube we could get alot more but that could be expensive.... You may be able to make a really cool water balloon gun?????????? The pressure gives me some concern...

More to come

I personally love the idea. The reckless and arrogant pwc wakejumpers that come within ten yards of the stern of a running boat may think twice when they end up with a nice forehead stinger and nose full of water!!!

Mayfloat – you don’t actually have to be in the sun…just thinking about will have the same effect. :)

Just a thought: I can see a problem with a fast approaching PWC and a rider that gets nailed in an unprotected eyeball. Take the speed of the PWC and add it to the speed for your golf-ball-sized water ball…apply that to the eyeball plus loss of vision and multiply by attorney fees and court costs.

Also, I don’t know if what you want to do is a crime…and I don’t know about your state laws, but in California, things that aren’t firearms are required to be defined as firearms when used in the commission of a crime. That includes pneumatic launched projectiles, including water! There is a mandatory 5-year, no parole prison sentence just for the use of that water cannon in the commission of a crime here. But I don’t know if it is actually a crime. The last thing you need is to get tangled up in an otherwise preventable issue. I can just image what would be involved if someone got hurt, and that someone is a friend or relative of someone else in law enforcement…

Just things to consider.

Rabbit,

Buzz Kill. :D

To be honest this thing would be terribly cumbersome to construct. But the theory works, and oooohhhhh just the dream of knocking off an inconsiderate jet boy is going to require me to take a cold shower tonight. :p

ZmOz:
I made those things too. Fun, eh?

Mayfloat:

Have your ever seen ANYTHING that launches a blob of water? No? That's becasue it's a liquid!
It will either have a range of 5 feet or disperse in 5 inches.

OR did you want to lauch the frozen kind?

You cannot launch anything at other people.

Now a good can of fart spray and a nice head wind.....

Rabbit is right of course, but some mega squirt gun might come in pretty handy when a jet ski comes too near. Maybe a retractable scoop to make sudden roostertails while under way? Oooh! Just a large PVC elbow on a pole or little arm to scoop the water a few feet sideways when running at speed? Good sport! How many points for a hit? Open season on PWC!!! :D
(Well, I can fantasize, can't I?)
Disclaimer: Kids don't let your parents try this! ;)

It sure is ashame that we have a sue happy nation. Where would we be if Boone and Crockett was able to sue them indians.

Come on now, who says my intentions are criminal or me intentionally aiming at them. Every good captian knows you fire a shot across the bow first. :p

Besides the people on PWC's, skiers, and people that boat get wet. If you see them wearing bathing suits, they could be game.

My cannon will probably end up being just a super distance squirt gun. I'll just have a bunch of nozzles like a shower head.

Sometimes people who worry about what "What If" so much that life will pass them by.

I'm still going for it.

Betcha this post will linger almost as long as the "Cats In My Boat" classic thread of a few months ago. Just get one of those super squirtguns at Wallyworld. They will project almost a pint for a good ways. Our neighborhood rug rats are quite good with them during summer. Looks like its almost as much fun as the snowball fights of my mis-spent youth.

One of the best parts about driving my diesel truck is the cloud of black smoke I can blow at tailgaters. Something similar in the exhaust might work well for the wake-jumpers. I had one of those idiots behind me one day while I was towing a skiier. I just pulled around until my big boat was aimed at his little one. Eventually he got the message. Jet skis get a horrible case of tunnel-vision when they're only looking to the next wave.

Re: Ideas on a water cannon

Ok you guys are proabably way ahead of me in your thinking but,...Couldn't you just find an appropriate sized nozzle to get a good burst of water. My only concern would be velocity but if you used a high arc all that psi is spent gettting it airborne and you can let gravity bring it back to your target. Just make sure not to catch anyone while it is under preasure. With a burst from the cylinder you should wind up with short burst of water. Not a steady stream but not a blob either. If you have an adequate air suply line size and you place the valve near the ram a short blast of air should result in a "Good Launch"

I claim no responsability for your devious ways! ;)

Re: Ideas on a water cannon

Water Sports go hand in hand with boating I think SS MAYFLOAT :D You should design it with 4-6" PCV to look like cannon and mount it on the swim step :)
I use the trim on a 90hp OB jet. Nail it real quick and it sends a stream like a fire hose out to about 150 ft! Kids on the beach always like it when they see a 30ft high water stream and the kid in the boat enjoys it too ;)

Keep us posted... Hmmm wonder if one could get a tag from the fish & wildlife for PWC's and what would the limit be??

One more thought. You will ofcourse need to name your cannon like our military often does.
PWC Kill Switch! :D :D
