Hey guys, what sound does your lower make? Is it on the loud side, quiet side, does it have a "whir" to it? I just put this all back together, and I'm not sure but the lower seems kind of loud to me. I even put a dowel to it and it sounds like maybe something is spun. Lower is definately louder than upper.

Mine's fairly quiet I think. Could be a problem. A true mechanical can be used from what I've read, but you have to change the shift converter housing, and it uses a different lower cable.

The one I'm looking at has a cable included. My lower is pretty loud. Wondering if my problem is bearing or any other number of problems in the lower. I am not going to take apart the lower if I don't have my problem narrowed down to it, and I dont have the alignment tools. Tell me, I noticed when I disassembled the shifter box that it was not pointed in the middle of forward and reverse. Could this misalignment cause the unit to jump at higher rpm? Doesn't seem like it would, but you never know.

I don't think so. Part of the adjustment procedure to set neutral at neutral has you finding engagement for forward & reverse and adjusting the control cable halfway between those at neutral. So the middle of the box isn't necessarily where it should be set. Mine included.

I think hydro units were made between 78-81. So if you found a 78 full mechanical make sure it really is. You also want to verify that it would work with your setup. I'd hate to steer you in the wrong direction! One thing I can't quite remember is if you need to replace the converter housing, or just the lower shift cap housing. If the latter, you'd be set.

I think you should go for this jh. Direct replacement. Then you can play with your current one and learn at your leisure.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OMC-...561588557QQcategoryZ50442QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Oops! I just noticed it has a broken skeg. I thought the price was too good to be true. Incidently this one is a hydro-mech, not just a mechanical as stated.

Thats the one I am talking about Boomer. Damn your good. You say that looks like a good replacement? I believe I can either reapair or I have seen on the boards a skeg cover to repair that part. Your advice on that part of it? Thanks gents, I appreciate your putting up with the novice over here.
