I posted a seperate thread about a shredded drive belt on my Bayliner and got a load of good advice.

A boat mechanic is now suggesting that a defective alternator could be responsible for shredding my fan belt. When I tested the alternator it seemed to rotate completely freely but the boat mechanic is trying to tell me that the alternator might be providing too much resistence when the engine is running! Is he trying to screw me!?

I still favour the rusted pulley theory but stand to be corrected if need be!

if you get the pulleys in good condition and its still eating belts there is not much let to try but that

most alt repiar shops should be able to test it and change the bearings for much less than a new one

tommays

Tony C.
An alt. will turn very freely by hand. But when the alt. is charging the battery it offers considerable torque (resistance) to the driving belt. If the belt is not tensioned properly it will slip and eat the belt in short order. If the bearing is bad it will often not feel smooth when turned by hand.
Uncle Dave
