Hi, I have just began to rebuild the upper unit on my 1988 omc cobra 5lt 230hp. I bought the books and I have all the parts. I'm not new with rebuilding outdrives I'm just looking for someone who Know's what the pre-load on the bearings should be on the yoke and waterpump shaft bearings and the bearings which are in the bearing carrier that hold the vertical gear.

Thanks

if you dont have a manual with the specs and the correct order to do things in it would be hard to rebuild them correctly

tommays

Thankyou for your insight, as I 've stated, I have the manuals, I would just like a second persons opinion as 5-6 ftlbs of torque on the waterpump shaft bearings seems a bit high.

Thanks

if you have something like a clymer manual VS the orginal that may be a problem the clymer tends to have mistakes and cover to many different drives

tommays

Re: Omc Cobra Outdrive Help Needed

From my 1988 OMC shop manual:
U-joint shaft should have zero end play, if not re-shim
Correct upper gear backlash is .009in to .015 in (0.23 to 0.38 mm)
Upper gear rolling torque (hold upper unit with u-joint shaft hanging down vertically)
spec for rolling torque of the shaft is 4-20 in lbs (o.5-2.3 NM)
Hope that helps. The set up on these seem complex, like setting up a rear drive differential on a truck.
