The Oil pan on my '88 4.3LX sprung a leak. Can I use a standard automotive oil pan as a replacement? The dipstick is on the starboard side, does this make a difference?

I plan to change the timing cover at the same time. Can I use the automotive version? Are "marine" gaskets necessary?

i think the biggest difference is the dipstick is set up to pump the oil out on marine pans

i dont think theres any difference in gaskets that dont contact water dirrectly like the head gaskets

tommays

The pan gaskets and the timing cover gaskets are all the same... no such thing as "marine". The pan will have to be compared to make sure the drain hole is where it should be for your application.

And on the replacement pan (and I am simply excited that someone here has the foresight to also replace the timing cover!!!!)...make sure you toss a good coat of the best paint to protect it from rusting out again too soon.

I used the chrome plated one on mine ,only 35 bucks. Not sure if this causes cathodic protection issues for you saltys though.

You can always have it powder coated.
