After some serious rain water in the bilge of my brother’s Mako 23 straight inboard, we have a weird problem. Water got in to the trans so we changed the fluid. Now when we run it kicks the fluid out under load then begins to slip. If we top it back off it will be fine for a few min till it kicks out the fluid again. What is going on? I can’t see where it is leaking from. Ideas?

Mac

Re: Inboard transmission kicks fluid out

How long did water stay in the trans?.. eeek. Hope you caught that soon.. The clutch plates don't like getting wet..

Are you sure you got all the watery tranny fluid out?... Did you drain the tranny cooler too?...

If the fluid is even slightly milkey, change it again..

What fluid did you use?.. ATF(automatic trans fluid), Dextron 3?..

When you "top it off" are you topping it off to the mark on the dipstick, or just filling the trans to the top of the filler hole?...

Overfilling it will certainly cause a leak (blow out seals, blow oil out the vent), and overfilling may cause slipping..

I'd clean up the trans and the bilge as best you can, make sure the fluid is not milkey and that it's filled to the mark after the trans is at operating temp, then run it to try and pin-point the leak..

Watch the vent on the top of the trans next to the shift lever for leaking..

Hoping for the best for ya..
Keep us updated.. :)

Re: Inboard transmission kicks fluid out

1. Used ATF
2. Flushed Trans by Changing fluid 5-6 Times(looks like New No froth)

3. Filled trans to the mark while boat was on the tralier W/Flush

I noticed that when I changed the starter I may have knocked the vet tube (just the tube no nipple damage). Could that be the problem?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!
I hope to hear good news

Long as you can push the cover down on the vent tube and have it spring back up, it should be ok..

Gotta trace that leak out, V12Mac...
There are seals in the front pump and at the rear coupling that could be suspect.. Several gaskets in between..

Rust on coupler and/or input shaft can eat up seals..

B/W 71C Manual.. Might help...
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze6mxo8/downloads/Velvet_Drive_Serv_Manual.pdf

Worst case senerio (if it's a B/W 71c), it is an easy trans to service, and parts are available..

Things are looking bad, we cleaned and dried the bilge and tracked the leak to somewhere up at the front of the transmission. Not much room in there to poke around.

It is not a big deal to change out seals. You can get a complete rebuild kit for around $75.That is seals, gaskets and clutch plates if it is a BW.Trick is to see were the pump is set at,and to replace it back the same way.

Re: Inboard transmission kicks fluid out

I got a buddy who has done a few of these to help out on Friday and we pulled the (velvet drive 1:1) tranny. The hardest part was getting it out of the bilge. On this hull the trans sits slightly behind the opening in the floor and just ahead of the access panel. Someone at Mako should be shot.

Any way the consciences seems to be that since we had to do so much work to get it out (had to pull the center con out) we should have a pro rebuild it so we don’t run the risk of doing the job twice.

Any suggestions for shopping for a tranny rebuild shop? If I swap this for one that is on the shelf and ready to go how do I know how the pump is set like prockvoan says?

Mac

I agree on the rebuild 100%..

On the pump, there are two marks/arrows 180 degrees apart.. RH-->TOP, and LH<--TOP..

If the engine is a standard rotation, or lefthand; the pump will need to be indexed with the LH<--TOP at the top of the transmission..

Re: Inboard transmission kicks fluid out

Trans got dropped off yesterday, should be ready for a Friday night re-install. Hopefully all will go smoothly. This should be a great rig now. New motor +/- 50 hours and now a rebuilt trans.

What should the breather line look like when it all goes back together? All that is there now is a clear plastic tube, should there be a check valve or filter element on the end?

Mac
