excuse the jargon, new boat owner...bayliner roundabout - 4.3L alpha one Mercruiser (2005) - 21 hours - 21pitch prop. today experienced jumpy RPM in idle and while in gear - between 2000 & 3500 RPM.s The motor would jump up & down on its RPM's. Also, it only happend once, shutting off the engine the motor continued to run for a few seconds...is this a fuel filter issue or cavitation or what...first time boat owner can use your help before I bring it in for my 20 hour check-up...thanks all.

In this case I would say you need to take it in before the twenty hours are up. Anytime you have a run-on situation, you run the risk of water being sucked into the cylinders....not good. This all could be traced back to an electrical problem with the ignition, or possibly a fuel delivery issue. In either case, this is a warranty problem and should be fixed before your motor gets trashed.

Thank-you very much! :) I'll be bringing it in on Tuesday next week - I'll let you know how it goes - anything specific that I should tell service to look for - because I don't want them to treat as nothing...I'd rather they do a complete service check - any thoughts?
