Would anyone know of a supplier for rebuild parts (distributor)? Looking for advance counter weight springs (and point mounting plate if available) for a 20-year-old distributor point type on a Chevy 350 with Mallory electronic conversion. It is the same setup that was on a 1973 Van I had, but parts were readily available at most Auto supplies.
Call me crazy but I feel better rebuilding it myself rather than someone that thinks that there warranty is going to do me any good 15-20 miles out in lake Michigan! Provide me with an unconditional guaranty of 15-minute repair/tow service (that’s how quick the weather can change) and they might get my business.
NAPA has the whole distributor, electronics, rotor and cap but no springs.
Had the same problem with a starter on another boat and when a supplier was found they said had to be a certified mechanic to purchase the parts.
A little chunk of bronze and some larger brushes easily produced these parts but springs are a bit different.

Re: 350 distributor rebuild parts

Most larger auto parts stores, and retailers that deal with auto restoration parts carry weights and springs. Be sure you replace the upper bushing and check the shaft for wear in that area. If the shaft is worn, the bushing is worn as well. A worn upper bushing and/or shaft causes dwell jitter and very erratic ignition performance. If both are bad, replace the distributor. It's just a matter of economics unless you happen to have an economical source of parts.

MSD makes a marine Pro-Billit ready-to-run distributer that has an electronic pickup. It works very nicely. Can be ordered from Jegs.com and be there in a couple of days.

Re: 350 distributor rebuild parts

Have a distributor on order and should be in this week. That leaves 2 in good shape to rebuild (one in the other engine).
Spare parts can delay a trip no parts can cancel it and new parts do not always work.
