I just got an 84 marlin inboard outboard 140hp with merc outdreive. When I put it in gear it has A tendency to clash A little bit before it goes into gear. On the throttle handle it has A lever witch I believe is like the clutch. I grip it all the way and it still clashes A little. Also when you put it into reverse it dies out unless you give it lots of gas.Foward is fine just clahing gears for A second then goes in. Can anybody tell me how to adjust this. Thanks in advance.....

Re: Clutch adjustment

Owning a car with a standard shift transmission doesn't mean you know how to operate a clutch and shift gears.
Owning a boat does not mean you know how to operate it, and unlike a car, not everybody knows how it's done to do it properly.
Find a boat dealer, or a local marine mechanic (that happens to actually know what he is doing), or the US Coast Guard Auxilary, or power squadron and ask for help in understanding how to operater your boat.
YOu may have some shift problems and some adjustments/replacements are needed in the shift cable/shift interrupt system of your boat, but how you grip the shifter has nothing to do with it.

Re: Clutch adjustment

Thanks for your meaningless responce but the shifter does have A lever on it and it does actually work as A clutch. Wish I had A camera so i can take A picture of it and show you.Why do people answer questions who have no idea what they are talking about. There are many kinds of boats and setups and just because you havent heard about it doesnt mean it doesnt exist...

insulting possibly the single most knowledgeable and helpful person on this forum is not the greatest idea in the world.

I wouldn't expect any outpourings of help from the forum in the future if I were you.

Re: Clutch adjustment

I am thinking its more of a loose nut behind the helm issue. if it is a merc unit it has a mechanical dog style cluth. all the shifter does is move the linkage. if done properly it wont grind but will have a solid clunk. if moved to slowly it grinds. dont baby the shifter. so unless you have some basterdized rig it should have the 140 153 CID with a alpha style unit. all alpha's use a mechanical dog. its not a disc type clutch. its a mechanical slam shift.
but I am as ignorant as DonS so I will stick with the loose nut theory.

Re: Clutch adjustment

Hey marlin, as alsready stated, DonS is one of the best on this site and the wrong person to start insulting if you want much help. I am not saying he or anybody else is 100% correct always, but you can bet he is usually correct.
With that said, an alpha drive has no clutch control in the throttle handle, you probly have a shift cable going out or you are being too nice when you shift into gear. Look at this link, it will show you all of what is inside an alpha drive. If you know what you are looking at, you will understand why it will "clunk" when it oes into gear.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6B3R3.PDF
BTW: this is a link that I got from DonS!

I was not trying to be insulting to anyone. But why is it everytime certain people that answer your question have to insulte your intelegence first instead of just answering your question. If you dont have anything helpful to say, dont say anything at all. People don't post here to be insulted when they ask a question. They post here for some help.

Re: Clutch adjustment

Thank you very much to all who gave me advice to my shifting problem. Like I said I was not trying to insult anyone just trying to ask for some advice.
By the way my boat is totally diffrent from the link you sent me to.
I guess you can say its not your average set up that you can buy at any boat store. This boat was custom ordered with high performace engine and outdrive A totally diffrent set up then stock.
Boat was taken to the local marine shop and they were even amazed. And yes it does have A clutch, it was adjusted and seviced in 2 hours time.I got it back and already had it out on the water. She's fast previous owner says she'll do 85.I dont doubt
it.But thanks for the advice from everyone.

Re: Clutch adjustment

Hi Marlin1,

I am glad that you got the boat sorted out. I would be amazed to see 140 HP push your boat to 85. However, please keep in mind that it is more than enough to get into trouble with. Please consider the suggestions from DonS to attend a boating safety course from the Coast guard or the power squadron. These aren't just lectures about wearing your lifevest and making sure your lights work (although these are important and covered). They teach safe operation of the boat.

Ask yourself if you would drive a car without brakes? Now think that your boat is close to the weight of a car, same HP, but no brakes and corners WAY differently. Please don't become a statistic, or potentially turn others into statistics.

I got to admit that my wise a$$ side of me wants to correct spelling in your post about not wanting your intelligence insulted. ;)

Re: Clutch adjustment

Thank you Eggk8 I have taken the course before I even bought A boat.(and this is not my first boat)It was well worth the time spent and very educational :)

You know the last time I checked JESUS died many, many, many years ago and he was the last person I knew that could walk on water...So he with out sin cast the first stone..That was once told to me by A wise a$$.

Re: Clutch adjustment

what type of 1984 drive are you getting 85 MPH out of? in fact what type of outdrive can anyone get 85MPH with a 140 mercruiser? can ya post us a drive seriel number? I would like to see a pic of a merc drive with a "clutch". other than the standard dog clutch or cone clutch like a bravo has. in fact post us an engine and a drive seriel and maybe we can ID this one. but so far other than the cone clucth in a bravo type case or a dog clutch (mechanical slam shift) I have never seen a merc with a seperate clutch lever. just a shift lever. I have seen custom dual levers that one lever controled FWD, N and REV and the other throttle but nothing like you described. please post those numbers so I can learn something new.
