yep...take cable off from shift box in rear of motor...take off side plates where drive tilts..from there its fairly self-explainitory..there is also a retainer on cable just above ball gear that needs to be removed....have some help..drive is heavy and you will need help pulling cable thru the transom..be careful with cable they are not cheap

Re: 800 stringer removal help

Thanks much..pretty much straight forward i guess..just didn't want to screw anything up...sounds like the shift cable is the most difficult step...after reading the stringer posts, looks like I'm going to get alot of experience keeping this setup in good repair..fingers crossed....thanks again..

Re: 800 stringer removal help

I just removed my stringer outdrive yesterday. Everything went smoothly except for the shift cable. Could not get it through the intermediate housing hole. I would like to meet the engineer who come up with that design. How do you disconnect the shift cable at the lower end? I don't have a manual and I am just removing the unit so I can dispose of the boat and hate to throw away a good lower unit.

Re: 800 stringer removal help

did you undo the bolt and retainer on the intermediate. If so, just give it a good yank. Reomving it from the lower end is a MAJOR repair job, that's why we have to be SO CAREFULL with the cable when removing the stern drive. It's just wedged in there, so be sure it's free inside the boat, and pull. It should come out. Try some lube oil or such. Good luck!

The cable normally stays attached to the lower unit.

Re: 800 stringer removal help

Evening...well...removed the sterndrive today..went pretty smooth..little problem with the cable, but she came out..problem is after I removed the old upper gearbox and went to install the one I purchased, found out it didn't have the worm gear for the steering..the casing looks similar, but not drilled out to accept my setup for the steering..guess I'm screwed now...anyone out there have a half decent upper gearbox with steering they want to unload..?? the gears and bearings are like new, but no use to me..anyone need a unit like this..??

Hmmmm. You got an upper from a pre-800. Bummer.

We have all made mistakes along the way.

Put on Ebay and get what you can for it.

Rats... some electric (pre-800's) did actually have the worm gear shaft. This is what is known as "true course" steering.

There is also LH and RH worm setups too though, so when you find the right upper, you may still need to swap the shaft, or, if your boat design gives you room, you may be able to flip your steering cable 180 deg. at the helm (that's how I did it w/ mine, then drilled a new hole in the steer shaft at the helm).

I have a 400 upper you can buy. It needs seals (don't they all). But works fine. It's a 1981 upper 400. If you have a 6 or 8 I don;t think they interchange. Different gear ratios. Be careful, theres too many different ones out there.
