Hello All- New to the forum here. I searched and found that RubberFrog had similar symptons.

I have a Bayliner Capri 2150 (1989) w/ OMC 5.8L Cobra. We took it out and it ran great for 10 mins or so and then just stopped suddenly. We were able to start it back up and it ran 1-2 mins and again just stopped. Then we tried to start it and it was a very slow cranking with no start. Tried again and got the solenoid click happening.

When we got home, we muffed it in the driveway and it started right up and ran just fine. We turned it off and restarted it about 7 times and every time was a go.

At rest, the Battery had 12.3 volts across it ... this voltage did not change while the engine was running ....maybe a bad alternator (but that would not explain the engine shutting down so suddenly.

Any thoughts or recs very much appreciated.

RubberFrog - how can your upper unit be shot/seizing up if it runs fine in your driveway?

Thanks

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=012808

this goes over the starter system but you may have small differences

12.3 volts is pretty low if the battery wont hold more after a recharge its on its way out it should hold at least 12.6

you can carry it into most battery places and they will load test it to confirm it

when the motors running the voltage should be in the 13.8 to about 14.5 range so it sounds like your not chargeing

which could kill the boat out on the water and the battery might recover enough to turn over when your home

all you cables and connections need to be cleaned and checked there very old in the marine world

tommays

Thanks for the reply tommays. Even if the alternator is shot, I would think that a battery in "good" shape would allow the boat to run for more than 10 minutes. Do you have a feel for this? I can remember years ago driving my car with no alternator for 40 miles to get home one time (and I had to use parking lights because it was getting dark. I was amazed I made it 40 miles (although I lived 45 miles away)

Thanks

i would fix what you NO is a problem the chargeing system does not appear to be working

when you have a good chargeing system and a good battery you may not even have a problem

tommays

I can see the battery only lasting 10 minutes if you're running a blower, bilge pump and any other accessories - stereo, VHF, nav lights, etc. Your trim pump will take a good bit of battery power as well, so if you're running that you may see a big draw.
