Re: OMC service manual

Don't think so. I believe the RGD models were 1991's. Look at your engine model (on a plate affixed to the engine). Mine (1989 4.3L) is on top of the engine, close to the edge of the spark arrestor cover. The last three letters should correspond to the manual you need (for example, my engine model is a 4329APRMED, my OMC Service Manual is for MED and MEF models.

If your boat is an '88, chances are that you need a manual designated for a DGE, DGP, GDE, or GDP model.

I BELIEVE that much of the material will be the same across the Cobra years, but know there were at least some small changes in that period. If at all possible, I'd get the manual for my exact engine model....

Re: OMC service manual

vic, I see you decided to take the new boat. Let me know if you change your mind, I'll give you your $4 grand back and I would love a drive out to PA. Wife's got relatives in Pitts and she told me she would love to drive out there to get it from you!! Unusual, she normally isn't too interested in the boat thing.

Re: OMC service manual

vic,

Probably shouldn't even mention it if it's too late, but I've heard that Seloc are generally better than Clymers. Any possibility of changing your order?

The OMC PWC/ PWS Manual is for 1990 model Cobras. While much of it is probably the same, I know there are some differences between the years. For what you're probably going to need to pay for it, I'd want the manual that matches my specific year.

What are the last three letters of your engine model number?

The pond sounds like it will work right about now.
I was debating seloc/clymer. I have a Seloc for my merc and i wasn't happy with it. Figured I try the clymer, $15 on eBay w/shipping. How much different do you thing the one for RGD models are?

looking at two manuals right now,
Factory OMC Cobra Stern Drive Manual Part number 507708, and
RGD Models, P/N 507953,dated 1990

Letters? only numbers I found so far were on a plate in the engine compartment:
model:985288 serial:TO121607

Re: OMC service manual

Why don't you just call a Johnson/Evinrude dealer and see if they can order one for you? That's how I got mine 3 years ago, see if they are still available. I have the owners operators manual, the parts manual and the service manual. I seem to recall the factory shop manual only cost 30-40 bucks or so. Plus you need to develop a relationship with a dealer that can get you OE parts anyway, you'll need some sooner or later!
E bay is good for some stuff but sometimes you gotta just bite the bullet and go to the source!

Re: OMC service manual

If you can find a new one still available from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer, definitely go that route. Gotta be a J/E dealer somewhere reasonably close if you're in PA. Or look one up on the internet, I'm sure they'd mail it to you if they can get it. Unfortunately I've gotta feeling they may be hard to come by. Lou C probably bought the last one!

The 985288 sounds like the drive number. Weird, but I don't see that particular number listed in the table of Cobra models in my Clymers manual, (pages 71-75 when you get yours). The drive numbers listed for 1988 models all start with 9852, but the 5.0Ls end in '71' or '72' and the 5.7Ls end in '73' or '74'.

Wonder if the model number isn't there because it was upgraded from a 5.0 to a 5.7L? Model number is 8 or 9 digits with the last 6 of them letters.

Anyway, for either a 5.0 or 5.7 1988, looks like you'd want a service manual for GDP models.

I personally wouldn't want to go with the manual for RDG Models. i believe that changes from year to year were minor, but 4 years difference would be a bit too much for me....

From what I can tell, the 507708 manual looks like it's the one for 1988 Cobras, but don't hold me to it. In addition to the Service Manual, I'd get an OMC Parts Catalogue as well....

Re: OMC service manual

OK guys the # on my 1988 shop manual is 507708 so you are right Lake!
BTW Lake have you had your boat out to see how the shift adjustment is?
I have not tried to do mine since the shop does such a good job. Amazing how good these can shift when they are adjusted right.

Re: OMC service manual

Prev owner blew the drive up and had it rebuilt. I wonder if it is even the same drive that was originally on it. Is there any serial #'s on the drive itself?

Re: OMC service manual

There is supposed to be but it could be missing or painted over. They were on a plate that was located on the lower edge of the port side of the upper unit, right by the trim cylinder.

Re: OMC service manual

Lou,

Thanks for asking, but I still haven't got it yet :( . I did everything according to instructions but when I put the outdrive back on (I had 'dry' fit it when I thought i had it right) I found the shift cable measurement at the engine to have increased to 8"! Did everything over again, and went from 7 5/8" with drive off to maybe 7 13/16" when I put it back on.

Needless to say, can't get the rest of the interior adjustments correct whit that measurement off (can't get it to fully engage forward gear). Have a couple of theories I want to check out but gotta head out for the weekend so won't get to it till tuesday at least. If I do get it, I'll post what i think the problems were and what fixed it. If not, I'll prolly be starting a new post with some specific questions and some close-up pictures to see if anyone can help me solve this puzzle!

Vic, if you do need the 507708 manual there's one on eBay (prolly what you're already loooking at).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4570614136&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

Get yourself a psrts manual too, but make sure it is the one for your drive. I saw one for an '88 Cobra on eBay, but think it was for a different setup than what you have (the OMC service manuals cover multiple models for a given year, the OMC parts catalogues are specific to a particular model).

Good for you, it is well worth the $$ and makes fixing stuff a lot easier.
