Thanks in advance to al that reply. I have a 1979 SC240 Slickraft Cabin Cruiser with 580 original hours. The shift cable broke last wekend and the Marina wrench replaced it. He had trouble getting the engine to shift "out of gear" from fwd or rev. I mentioned I had this problem prior to the cable breaking. He then checked the Kill switch and ntoced it was not killing the engine prior to shifting. He bent the arm slightly and everything seemed to work perfectly. Today, about 2 hours run time later, I was coming out of the hole and had just planed and the engine reved and came out of gear making a whinning noise. I had no rev or fwd. I looked and could see the shift plate moving where the new cable was installed. What do I check first?
Also, I noticed a vibration just seconds before the boat came out of gear. I have noticed a rattling sound in the lower unit when I turn the unit extreme left or right. The wrench who put the shift cable on said my out put shaft "u" joint may need greasing... I'm running a 15 inch by 21 pitch merc. alum prop. About 10 miles before the boat quit pulling, I was cruising along at about 3300 RPM and 26mph and it acted like I trimmed it "up" too much. I just pulled back on the throttle and caried on with a little down trim.
My first post soo it may too wordy just wanted you to know the facts.
Nick Nichols
