"Smokey" 351efi 1993, anybody??

Have a 1993 351 5,8l efi w/omc cobra. When idle, it tend to smoke, mostly white smoke with maybe 20% black smoke. This only happens at idle. Idles little bit erraticly, 600-800 rpm!!!!! Runs fine in the rest of the rpm range. Compression is good, changed fuel injectors and a fuel distributor. Anybody have any ideas regarding the smoke and the erratic(variable) idle????<br />Finn

Not sure on the ford motors, but two areas to check could be the throttle position sensor (TPS) and Idle Air Control motor (IAC). A failure of either of these (both on the throttle body) can cause the symptoms you are experiencing.

I'd bet money it's the IAC as well, Ford's are notorious for bad IAC's. Other than that, I'm a chevy man.

The tps would probably make the boat run erratic.. I would also look at the IAC.

What temp is your motor running at? you can get a normal Ford EECIV code scanner to hook up to the EFI system to see if it has a code in the system.

I changed the IAC and the TPS, still doing the "smokin". Only at low rpm. The motor runs great exept for this problem. Any other sugg.????

Injector resistance? Vacuum leak? Electronics are generally pointing to a mechanical failure. Since you say the compression is good, I would look at fuel delivery.....my 2 cents

did you get the code scanner and look for codes?? The boat itself may have your answer and it know better than all of us guessing based on limited info.

I finally found a mechanic that has a scanner that works on this 351, this time of the year they are way to busy.Thanks for the respond though!!!!!
