1986 5.7 V-8 Chris Craft 350 cubic inch engine. Engine has been rebuilt and when we first start off there is a metal burning smell that goes away after a few moments. The drive is in the water and seems to perform well - what is the cause?

Re: Metal Burning Smell

Dan, when the boat first starts there is no smell. Then, after a couple of moments going down the channel, the smell starts and then after about a few minutes of running, the smell goes away. Nothing appears to be running hot. The oil pressure is okay, the water pressure is okay, the battery power is okay...

Over the weekend, when we had been out for about 20 minutes, and then slowed down to anchor at a beach the smell came back for a few moments until I turned the engine off. After we had been there for a couple of hours we pulled up the anchor and then left with no smell at all.

If the motor was just rebuilt and painted, the paint will smell a little at first.Charlie
