Ill assume its a GM V-8. Was the bolt pattern straight across or staggered?

Re: engine serial # id help

the doc is talking about the bolts that attach the starter to the block. Chevy starters come in two bot patterns. But I don't know if thay is your problem. Was there any shims between the starter and block when you took the old starter off? If so, did you replace them when you put the new starter on?

oh i see thanks , well as far as i remember there was no shim between the block an the starter just the bolts. i was thinking it seems the rebuilder use a diffrent starter to rebuild ours. i think he may have put on a diffrent face on the starter, would that cause a problem?

Re: engine serial # id help

Yes it would. If it is not engaging the flywheel, then the gear is wrong. There are only so many starters for a gm v8....If yours isn't working the re-build guy should be able to figure it out. If not......Well..... Get a different guy.....JK

ok i just spoke with the jasper people he stated that the engine is kinda old. so they dont have any info on it.

he said i must look close where the bellhousing connect to the engine block there should be numbers carve on the block, that should tell me if it is a 303 327 or 350 engine . ok guys if it is either one of the three will it take the same starter???

Re: engine serial # id help

As Explained above,.......

It Doesn't Matter What SBC you have,.... 327,....350,..... Well,.. There is No 303,... But Whatever,.........

There are 2(Two) starters used on SBCs,......
1 has the Bolts Straight Accross from each other.........
The Other possible starter has the 2 bolts in a Staggered Pattern............

The Differences are because of the Flywheel used,... Not the Size of the motor.......
A 14" Flywheel uses the Staggered Bolt Pattern.......
A 12" Flywheel uses the Straight Accross Bolt Pattern..........

Speaking of Flywheels,...........
Does your friends have Any Teeth left on his Ring Gear,..????
The Reason I ask is,.... I think that Might be Why the New Rebuilt Starter Doesn't Work..........

Re: engine serial # id help

bondo thanks for coming back. let me give you guys all the input on the starter

when first got the boat we was told the starter was sumerg about 5 month before so we took it out rusty as heck, have it rebuilt, install work fine, about one week later he was washing the boat and let too much water cover the starter so the starter just keep jam jam clicl click, took it back to the rebuilt guy when he finish we install it, it just spin spin and not catching the flywheel we took it back install again same thing not hitting the flywheel. got upset took it to a diffrent guy he claim he put a new solinoid charge 70 bucks same darn thing. so thats it i told him to get a new starter and stop been cheap, if he listen to me before and buy a new starter he would have been happy.

thanks again
