You are right to question this. But if the boat is new to you,the best thing is to put the correct oil in,use it.Then look again.

God knows what the previous oil was.Or what it should smell like.

DHP

Added thought, make sure you fill the drive properly. There is a 'dip stick' in the top of the upper gearcase.

DHP

Do you think it is fine to run it for about 10 or 15 minutes i just bought the boat and it runs great it just needs alot of cosmetic work and i want to take it to the lake to make sure everything works before i invest the time in it, i won it on ebay for real cheap and did not water test it just ran it. Do you think it would seize up the drive in a couple of minutes?

If the drive is low on oil,yes you will need big $$$$$.How long would you run your car engine without oil? A few minutes ?
DHP

Should be green in color. Mustard can't be good.

Did you run it with muffs on it? If you ran the motor without supplying water to the outdrive you probably damaged the impeller. Running it for ten minutes with a faulty impeller could cetainly do extensive damage to the motor. Take the time to properly inspect the boat or it will cost you a bundle of cash in short order. Thousands! Buy a manual. I am sure one of these guys can tell you which manual to buy. Dont waste money on a cheap manual. Spend a day searching the archives on this site, you will learn much valuable info and save yourself money.

I think you have reached the point where you need the manual.I prefer the original factory one.

DHP

I use Pennsoil Marine gear lube and it is a mustard like color... if that helps you at all.

If you don't fill it properly, from the middle "fill" hole, the chances are good you will destroy the drive. Buy a manual asap!

Every year I change mine. When I change mine it is always black. Goes in clear, comes out black. Its always been that way. Why would this stuff turn black (OMC 800)? Does the exhaust flow through the gear box or something?

Black oil is usually heavy use oil.Maybe do a change 1/2 way thru the season.Think about the color of your car engine oil if you don't change often enough.

DHP
