I know for most cars you can buy an aftermarket warranty...even old cars. (my dad has one on his '67 mustang) I know you can get such a thing with a new boat, but what about old ones like mine? ('72 Glastron) Is there any place I can buy a warranty for it? Basically mechanical insurance...

I'll do it for $7,000! Just don't make a claim or up it goes to $10,000 next year.<br /><br />"Fix as you go" is always cheaper than these so called used item warranties. The warranty company will not loose money on you. In the end, you will end up paying for the repair and the warranty companies profits too!<br /><br />Same crap with heat pumps/air conditionners on your dwellings. For the last 10 years somebody wants to sell me a warranty on my heat pump. If I would have paid for this every year, I would have blown enough cash equal to buying a new one...and my unit still hasn't even required an hour of service yet!

My philosophy has been to never buy any extended warranties. I mean everything. Cars, electronics, boats, etc. The only exception is when you get them thrown in for free. You will be thousands of dollars ahead in 10 years.<br /><br />Cobra 3.0 is correct. Companies would not sell extended warranties if they did not make money. Extended Warrantues are highly profitable for those that sell them. <br /><br />Sales people like to take advantage of your "fear" that it MAY break. Sales people usually stop bugging me when I ask them if they are selling me a quality product. The always respond "Yes, of course". I say that I do not need an additional warranty unless they are selling me substandard goods. You get the idea.

Regardless if they are worth the cost, are they available? Where from? I would like to look at them, what they cover, and the cost and decide for myself whether I want it or not. ;) These places WILL loose money on you. The way they make money is because the majority of the people that buy warranties never use them. The insurance company for my Jeep only has gotten about $1000 from me. In December I wrecked it and they gave me $5000, obviously loosing alot of money. If I would have had a warranty last season, for example, on my boat I could have saved $1500+ when I had my little oil incident. I would imagine the price is based on the worth of your boat, and mine's only worth $3 grand.

:) most after market warranties have to be puchased a month before your new boat warranty runs out!!!<br /><br />very hard to find an after market warranty when your loan payment runs out on a new boat.<br /><br />cheaper to buy a new motor with warranty and then buy extended warranty.<br /><br />extended warranties aren't cheap!!!<br /><br />Only two things that you want to buy extended warranties on:<br />one is a lap top computer and I forget what number 2 was!!!! ;)

ZmOZ,<br /><br />Sounds like you are talking about insurance not extended warranties? Both items you mentioned are insurance related. Insurance is a totally different beast. Insurance is mainly used to protect yourself from the loss or damage of assets, income and liability issues. If you are insuring the current market value of personal property, yes, the premiums are based on the current market value. There are several factors that are taken into account for liability premiums. For example, the liability portion of an insurance premium may be very similar for a similarly equipped 10 year old boat vs. a 2 year old boat. They both would cause similar damage if they struck another boat. You can get insurance for just about anything. Just contact your insurance agent or ask a friend for references. Then give a couple of agents a call and get some quotes. Premiums can vary significantly.

No, I'm not talking about insurance. Insurance protects you when you hit someone else, have your boat stolen, sunk, whatever. It doesn't help you when you break down and have to have $1000 worth of work done to get going again. Same goes for a car. You buy insurance against theft or accidents, but if you throw a rod you pay for it. Now, for cars you can buy a warranty, pretty much whenever you want. Usually they're sold through insurance companies. This will pay if you have mechanical problems. This is what I would like to have for my boat. I already have insurance in case it is stolen. But again, it doesn't cover the new powerhead I have to buy this year...

Ratfish – what you have said is exactly in line with the recommendation of Consumer Reports…EXCEPT… For the first time in their history, Consumer Reports is highly recommending extended warranties for those new plasma (flat screen) televisions.

my insurance policy covers my engine so if anything happens to it i tell them and they will take care of it but i never bother doing that unless it is a huge problem since i have to pay a $300 deductible on any claim
