Merc went knock knock

[THE BEEF]

A friend has merc outdrive that was worked on in the spring.He had a vibration in the outdrive.The shop he took it to replaced the u joint,input shaft,and bearings. Last week he was out on the lake and heard a knocking sound. He shut down right away<br />but it was to late. He had to be towed in. He had about 15 hours on the unit when this happend.<br />It's back to the shop .Thay said it was a broken tooth in the upper gear (Not there problem).<br />My question is if the backlash was not set up right could it cause this? <br />thanks<br />Beef

Most common cause of this is not having sufficient lower unit lube causing the upper unit to be starved out.

You fixed the weakest link it is just the next thing in line. Get used to it, you own a boat.<br /> I don't know how many times I have saved the money for it, spent all day installing it just to find out the next thing in line broke. It can be very frustrating. The worst is tell the wife that the boat is broken again just after I spent all that time and money to fix it. Thank God she hasn't thrown us both out already.

Amen. Thats why I buy old boats and fix them one piece at a time. Last year alternator and carb, this year first off was raw water pump seal leak, now manifolds salted away-new sitting on the bench, and spring will be new electronic ignition. I can't afford a new boat all at one time!
