On my '89 Invader with a Mercruiser Alpha I, the bell housing rubs against the bottom of one side of the gimball ring "guides" (not sure what the technical term is). Is this caused by misalignment of something or are there washers that are worn?

Thanks!
Dave

Worn spacers sounds right.....How long until your next bellows replacement? And how much side to side play? It really wouldn't be that hard to do the next time the drive is off, either.......I'ts getting about that time of year in alot of places.....JK

Actually, I am in the process of changing my shift cable, so I've already got the drive off.

I'm going to also replace the trim limit switch since it's out. While I'm in there I am going to replace the bellows also.

I'm assuming the only special tool I need is the hinge pin tool. (I already have the shift cable socket). And, I don't have any reason to take off the gimbal ring, right??

I saw a bellow tool on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=4576046632&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

I don't need that, do I?

And I don't need a engine alignment tool, right?

Thanks!!

If the gimbal ring "guide" on the one side is "shaved" down a little from the rubbing, that's not a problem, is it?? Normally it should not touch at all, so I'm guessing that if it's shaved down a little, that's ok.

That's Telling you that you have Excessive Wear in some or all of the piviting points of the Gimbel Assembley..............

Actually,..... The Scuffing of those alignment pads Should be Very Minimal................

(BTW, I just won my EBay auction for the Mercruiser #6 and #10 manuals... until now, I've only had the Seloc...):

I'm going to also replace the trim limit switch since it's out. ditto.. that loss of support at the back of the engine takes out a lot of couplers...

A 1/2" allen wrench works for the pivot pins if they are not too tight. The rubbing on the gimbal ring is a normal occurance. Engine alignment should always be checked out.....if your in there...check it out. Cover your tail.

actually a 1/2 allen works better than the cheezebone merc tool. I cut about 2" off one to use my 1/2 breaker bar and 1/2" six point socket. I broke to many merc tools and so far have not broken my tool.
