How about this gasket kit for the installation of my Vortec heads?

Bondo.....what do you think about Vatter's concern regarding the alignment of the intake with the thinner head gasket?

Re: Head Gasket

I Don't think about it At All...........

You're not Decking the Block,... Or the Heads,..... It'll fit Just Fine........

The Vortec heads are Made to be run with a .040 Quench.........

I'll be More Concerned when you go,+ buy a set of .040 Gaskets.........

The set in your link have No Spefications that I can find anywhere on that site.....

You Need a gasket in the .016 to .020 range,.... No Thicker..............

You've got semi-dished pistons with cut valve reliefs,......
You're running the stock cam,......
With 1.5 rockers,..... There's just No Way you have to be concerned with Any interference Issues........

And,... No,... I haven't been able to Find the gaskets I Found before........
But,.... I'll keep Looking.........

Thanks Bondo......I sent an email to find out the thickness of the gasket.

Keep looking! Hoping to get the heads this week. Would like to order the gaskets soon.

I think I am going to go with the high rise manifold.

Plan is to put the engine back in and install the heads and manifold before the winter!

Re: Head Gasket

Tony, I am sorry if this reply is of no use to you at all. I haven't really been paying total attention to your other posts. But it seems you are putting vortec heads & intake on. Would the mercruiser gaskets work for you? I just gave my local repair shop my engine serial # and he got me the mercruiser gaskets. I have a 1997 5.7EFI Gen +, and the heads had some bad valves. I looked up my engine on dougrussell.com & got the part number for the gaskets, but my local guy ordered them by me serial #. I now have the gaskets, would it do you any good for me to describe them to you?

Re: Head Gasket

Tony, no description of the thickness, and I have no calipers. But they are the OEM as far as I know. Whatever GM was building them with on the assmbly line in 1997.?!

Mercruiser part number is 27-75611 got that right off the label on the package they are sitting in.

Ya Got Me,................. I Don't Know......... :(

I know they're used for race cars, with the frequent teardowns,+ are Reused,..........

The gaskets I saw that were .018,.... Were an embossed Shim of steel or SSteel, with a coating on both sides, kinda like the new Fel-Pro .040 comp. gaskets,... Without the Comp........

With your closed cooling,.. I think you should go with a regular Shim Gasket,... They're embossed steel..... they come in the .016 to .020 range,......
I afaid that if you get over that,.. you'll Loose all of the benefits of the Vortec chambers....

Ayuh,.....
I'll look again tonite...........

Re: Head Gasket

Tony, I have the Fel-Pro catalog in front of me. Here it is. The steel shin gasket is .015 compressed. All the others which are composition are either .039, .041 or .051. I would say the .015 shim is your best bet. I have used them on race engines with flat top pistons at .025 down the deck with no problems. This one is closer to what ypu are looking for Mr Gasket 1130 .018 to .020 compressed

Hey Buttanic....MRG 1030 only calls for '57-'87, will they work on the new Vortec heads?

I'm getting kinda impatient..... :)

Would the 0.028 one make that much difference?

Re: Head Gasket

It's an 1130 not 1030 and I cannot think of a reason it would not fit other than the head and block surface must be smoother for a shim than for a composition. If the block and heads were surfaced with a grinding stone and not a Storm Vulcan cutter machine the surface would be smooth enough. Both Fel Pro are Mr Gasket say no type of sealer is required on any of their head gaskets provided the surface finish of the head and block is correct for the type gasket used and installation instructions are followed.
