I've got a 1995 volvo with SX drive and I'm getting ready to winterize it but I don't know where to get some of this stuff.

I need an oil filter, fuel filter, pump to suck out the oil from the oil change tube and some kind of pump to fill up the the stern drive with lubricant.

Unfortunately I don't have the original owners manual so I don't have part numbers, just a Seloc and clymer manual which are not much help.

Where should I start?

Thanks..

I'm not aware of any yearly maintenance kit.

See if this helps:

For the Oil Filter and Fuel Filter, log onto www.dougrussell.com. You can then drill down to your exact model Volvo and they will show you the correct part numbers right there. In fact, you can just order the parts right there on-line.

For the pump to change the engine oil and a pump for the outdrive oil, check any local boat supply store, or log onto www.boatersworld.com or www.westmarine.com.

Microwiz, Overtons sells kits which contain gear oil, oil drain pans and grease. I have never seen a complete kit however.

The pumps to remove the engine oil, and fill the lower units are universal. The type and size of motor (chevy, Ford) will determine the oil filter number. The fuel filter may or may not be common to the automotive type. You may be able to match it up at a an auto parts store. Antifreeze for winterizing is standard auto stuff. Fogging oil, fuel stabilizer and marine grease is common to the boating industry.

The antifreeze isn't exactly the same as the auto stuff. You need to use the non-toxic, environmentally friendly kind (pink, not green). This way in the spring if you start up your engine in the water, or in your driveway, you don't have to worry about hazardous chemicals being released from your engine.

Here I go again ... Do you have a local dealer ?

We probably tell as many boat owners how to do the work,as we actually do the work for them.

We do sell them the parts to do the job.

DHP

Re: Do they sell a yearly maintenance kit?

Thanks for the help everyone. After looking at some of the websites mentioned here I was able to find everything I needed.

DHPMarine: I do have a few marinas in my area however it was always my intention of buying the parts online and doing the work myself. I figured their time would be better spent working with paying customers.

You can find most of what you need here at iBoats. Forinstance here is the link to some of the items you mentioned (oil change pump.. LU lube pump)

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...gory=t&*******=066448440&search_type=category

Also, I wouldn't use the pink antifreeze as I don't believe it protects from corrosion. I use the Sierra stuff. Its expensive but its only once a year..

microwiz,
If I tell you how to service your boat, and you are in my shop, you are a paying customer,if you buy the product from me.

I am aiming, and have for several years,to have customers repair what they can, with any advice I can provide.Hopefully they buy my parts.

I don't want to charge the $70.00 an hour to repack their wheel bearings,or to put a winch strap on their trailer.THEY can do that.(if they can't I will )

I am going down a strange road, but I want my customers to pay me for the things they can't do ... gimbal bearings, gearcase rebuillds, etc.

Right now, online sites are doing great selling parts, and give some advice.Unless they give free shipping ... see your local dealer.

When the job is 1/2 done, and you need more advice.
and you bought on line ..... can they help you ?

DHP

DHP
In my opinion you are not going down a strange road. We have many customers that do their own work and we sell them parts and give out a lot of free information. We even lend out a few special tools like the alignment bar.
Then, if things do get past their abilities, they do bring them to us for repair. Of course in a small town like here, if they send the work to someone else, we sell them parts. But no free info or tools.

Re: Do they sell a yearly maintenance kit?

Thanks Don.I don't loan my shop tools, but may rethink this a bit. After picking my brain (what's left to it

),and then loaning the tool,I feel too close to replacing myself.I do sell quite a few hinge pin sockets and exhauast bellow stretchers each year.

But I see your point. If I sell someone a gimbal bearing and all the bellows, and a shift cable because he's capable of doing the job,I only help both of us to let him/her use my alignment tool.

DHP

DHP,

You could always swipe their credit card for $xx amount (your cost plus profit). If they return it within, say, 30 days, they get a credit; if not, you get the profit. Everybody wins.

I have a local shop by me that rents tools. I think their prices are very high for rentals. Something like $20 for an alignment bar. They have probably paid for that thing 100 times over. Because their prices are high for rentals, I usually buy most of my tools. The two I regret not buying are the gimbal bearing puller and driver. The rentals were a POS and the cost was high. Won't do that again.

DHP, were are you in MA? Maybe I can send some business your way...

The only place I can think of on the South Shore that will lends tools is Bill's Outboard - he just charges a deposit which gets credited when the tool is returned.
