You guys will Learn,.......Someday,.......

Pack a "Tool Kit",.......... Not just a couple of wrenches,...........
As you're pulling the drive,.. I Hope you're Also Looking at every piece of the drive as you work,.........
That's when you're going to Wish you'd brought the Whole Tool Box..............

BTW,......JK Is 100% Right,............. ;)

actually the rams on most of the later model Gen I drives use 5/8 wrench or socket. Bring one of each so you can hold one side while loosening the other. Unless your lucky and the rods are corroded in place :)

Justin

You probably will need something to drive the trim ram pin out.

DougV>

Tystik, dont be a fool and take a long drive and only bring 2 sockets with you.Take the set and a set of wrenches. To remove trim cylinder pin nuts you sometimes need a wrench or socket on each side.A large flat screwdriver may be necessary if the drive has not been removed in a while. If you take the minimum of tools like 2 wrenches or sockets.....Youll be soooorryyyyy !!!!

Is a drive that hasn't been removed in a long time (like maybe 15 years) going to come off easily?

If I were going to take a long drive to a boat where tools are not readily available and the boat has not seem maintenance for 15 years, I'd bring every tool I could find. It is highly likely your are going to encounter many issues of rust and siezed bolts requiring penetrating oil of some kind, vice grips, hack saws, pipe wrenchs to hold stuff to say nothing of needing an OEM Owners Manual and an experienced mechanic

A couple of 2x4s - 12" long. Oak if possible.
4 oak wedges, a 3lb. hammer. Some rope, to tie
cylinders out of the way. And if the neighbor
has one, a porta-power with wedge attachment.

Don't worry, there is nothing to it.

On the Real Stubborn 1s,..............

Bungie the trim cylinders up out of the way,.....
And chain the outdrive to something Solid,.......
Hook the truck up to the trailer,.. Make Sure the boat is well secured to the trailer,......
And,... Pull.......... :D

BTW,.... Make Sure it's in Forward,+ You Did take All of the nuts off...............

There is always the "Cut the bellows off, use oxy/Act torch and cut shaft off, then remove engine and drive the shaft and bearing out with a big hammer" method.
After 15 years, the bellows is junk anyway.

Re: stern drive removal

I guess the point here is the guy is in further than a couple of wrenches and 15 minutes are going to get him.
