Shift cable bellow

I have a 1995 135 HP with Alpha One drive. I noticed a leak and discovered the shift cable bellow was cracked. I am trying to see if this will be a simple fix, but everything I have read says I need to remove the stern drive, remove the shift cable and reinstall with the new bellow (or bellows). There is not enough room to pull the cable out from the boat without kinking the cable. Could I remove the hinge pins with the stern up/to the left and then pull the housing out a few inches - hoping that this will give me enough room the pull the cable without kinks (while leaving the other end of the cable attached to the stern). I purchased a new bellow and also purchased the hinge pin drive to remove the hinge pins. I have worked on several autos (4-8 cylinders), motorcycles, heavy equipment hydraulics. I think I am up to this one from the forum and web site discussions I have read. Enlighten me. Thanks.

Re: Shift cable bellow

The other bellows do not show signs of cracks or aging rubber. The other clamps look good. If I pull the stern, I see that I need to buy the 9/16 special socket to remove the cable. Is the engine alignment tool needed to put the stern back on (and not removing the housing)? Thanks you all.

Re: Shift cable bellow

Stern came off very well. Other bellows look dirty but are in good condition. Shift cable slides smoothly. Cleaned gimble bearing and re-greased with Mercury Gimble grease. Cleaned off gasket faces. Will purchase gaskets, o-rings tomarrow and hopefully back together same day. Thanks again.

Pulled stern. Removed cable. Installed cable with new bellows. Installed stern. That is the short of it.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Shift cable bellow

Since I have done that job about a hundred times, I'm quiet sure it was as easy as typing it.

Well, maybe a little longer, at least you survived.
Imagine what happens when the ujoint bellows goes bad and you have to replace the gimbal bearing, ujoints, reseal the input shaft seal and change the gear lube because water got in the drive. Along with replacing the bellows, which isn't as easy as the shift cable bellows.
