I thought I was getting gear lube in the bilge....looks to be oil. It is leaking under the pan where the dipstick assembly attaches to the bottom of the pan. How in the world do you tighten this thing?

I have a 1983 GM 5.7L with a OMC 800. Well, if I have to use the GB weld, how the heck do you reach this?

Looks to me like there is an adaptor that fits to the pan. Then the dip stick goes into that. I think this is seeping where the adaptor goes into the pan. I think all it probably needs is to be tighted.

That would be a problem difficult to correct in the boat. It's possible that you have a rusted pinhole too.

DUDE.... go to EBAY and look for a OMC Factory Manual.! Life will be much easier for you ... and us.

KaGee, I have a Clymers manual and its a piece of ****! It's like a Chelton manual for cars. Give me an idea of who makes good manuals.

that adaptor in your pan tightens against a washer, same way an oil pan plug on a car does.. You have to remove the tube (7/16 or 1/2.. I forget which) then replace the washer or what have you under the adaptor, then reinstall tube. The ferrule on the tube is a compression type -no seal there.

And on many, many boats it requires an engine pull to get to it. Nature of the beast.

Over the winter search Ebay. OMC factory manuals pop up there all the time. I bought a SELOC at first. Just like the Clymer's it's a POS. So last winter I started watching for a factory service manual and got one. I even found a parts breakdown. Both pieces ended up costing me a little more than I payed for the SELOC!

BTW... what Hystat said... that is what OMC used... but I wonder why the fitting is leaking? I would still be concerned about corrosion. Can you get a mirror and flashlight down there to see?

Thanks for all your help....I will try to take a picture....I'm thinking if I run the trim all the way up, I may have enough clearance to get to it from the front on the engine.
