Re: Something slips in the driveline

Until any manufacturer can provide a shop with fool proof answers,we will have to try some fixes to see if they work.It is not cut and dried.
I refuse to add up how much "Good Will" goes out our door each year, and consider it part of doing business. We try to charge something for our attempted solutions, and even give a break on the actual final solution.

This is why we don't do stringer drives and electric shift outboards.Older Mercs are also out.
Gotta Ted Williams outboard ... see ya.

Many shops wouldn't even look at a 19 year old boat.I think in this case the jumping out of gear also had to be fixed before further diagnosis.

It's not easy writting out the check to get your boat back, but until I get a majic wand,I will have to try a few things before the correct solution occurs.

DHP

Don you mentioned that some boats just won't tolerate much leaning in a tight turn without the prop blowing out. This was a Sea Ray Seville have you ever seen the same problem with one of these. PS DHP I also would really love to know what the true problem is , but sooner or later I guess the guy needs his boat back! Thanks for the help.

Re: Something slips in the driveline

Best thing you could do is call SeaRay and ask them. If the X dimension is at it's lowest dimension, then there is absolutely nothing you are going to do to cure the problem.
You basically have a customer trying to get the boat to do something with that it was never designed to do.
Have him slow down before turning or not turn so tight. Or have him buy a newer boat designed for high speed slalom running.
While going to a 4 bladed prop may work, it's probably killing the top end speed, and if he isn't getting WOT rpms, then he is also killing the engine.

Well said DHP, that makes sense to me. I think too often we expect people to have "the answer" not a guess. Years of experience probably help with diagnosis, but it isn't a sure thing until it's fixed.

Rabbit, the sarcasm doesn't help, but no, I don't get everything right the first time, but it doesn't cost people hundreds of dollars when I don't.

Cool it, AZFF.

You opened hostilities with a pretty savage attack that included several assumptions that turned out to be wrong. He came here for help, not premature judgement and lectures. The sarcasm was a pretty mild counter.

RDH has clearly made extensive effort to track down a very elusive problem, including seeking any advice he could get here. He has also written off a lot of that effort rather than charge the customer for it.

Many would have either simply refused to address the problem, blown a lot of smoke or charged the customer for the real effort and time involved.

I think you went off half cocked. Not like you at all. You are usually a very fair minded and courteous poster.

Thank you JB, I appreciate the advice.... I really didn't (and still don't) see anything I wrote that fits the description of a savage attack. I asked some difficult questions to hear, but I never addressed him in a hostile way.

I trust your opinion though and I need to make an apology.

Rabbit, my apologies if I came across as hostile and unfriendly. No hard feelings, I hope.

I believe the main point is that it wasn't up to anyone on this board to question "How, Why, When, Where, or even IF or by Whom" this was going to be paid for. The question was WHAT was causing the slipping, and it should have stayed on track instead of wandering off onto something else.

Thanks for the apology AZF, life is too short to hold a grudge and it takes too much effort.
