OMC/Volvo had a FI 245hp 302 Cobra in the early 90's.

Re: chevy outboard difference

I had a '79 Century and it was powered with a 351 Ford feeding an OMC outdrive. GM introduced the thinwall cast 6 cylinder as a 194 CID for the then new Chevy II in 1961. The 230 CID version was used in 1963 in the full size Chevy and in the 1964 Chevelle and its other GM intermediates, and I believe it went to 250 CID in 1968. It was used in that form until the 229 and 262 V6s displaced it in the 80's. There was even a 292 CID version for truck use as was pointed out earlier.

I had the 250 CID straight 6 in a 66 and a 68 Biscayne so it started at least back in 66

Re: chevy outboard difference

James, I think you are right that the big HP outboards were V8 but ask on the Outboard forum, I am sure they will know and it would heve been branded Johnson or Evinrude.

Re: chevy outboard difference

OMC made some V8 outboards for a time in the 275-300 HP range. some of the counter rotation models even ran the engine CCW instead of the normal CW.
the truck version of the inline 6 292 was a torque monster but if ya really wanted to break things ya stepped up to the GMC 305 V6. the 348 would pull but not like the 305. and yes both the 348 and the 409 were marinized. in fact I have my eyes on a complete late fifities early sixties chris craft 409 thats complete from pan to carb and bell housing to pulleys thats been sitting in a barn since about 1975. its one of a pair of running take outs, the other met an early demise in a shad boat.

Re: chevy outboard difference

I owned two GMC-305s..oh man! They were hosses. As you already know, they were big blocks.I owned a couple 348s.I think the 348 was more for car hot-rodding(and they were that)One 305 was in a big truck,it loaded, you could floor it in second gear,it would raise front wheels off the ground.

Re: chevy outboard difference

actually the 348 was developed as a truck engine and later the 409, neither worked well as hot rod motors due to a habit of self destructing above 5000 RPM. but the combustion chamber design was rather novel and they were produced at 409CID and an advertised 425 HP.
the 305 was a v6 not a big or small block but a very large piece of iron.
used to net fish with one. place it in reverse and it would idle down the beach all day long.
