How hard is it to replace th exhaust flappers on a 5.7L with exhaust through drive alpha system?
Has anyone done this themselves? Any pointers?
Am I better off paying to have someone do this?
Where exactly are the flappers located, and what has to come apart?

It's not a bad job if you have access. You have to remove the exhaust elbows and remove the hoses connecting the elbows to the Y-pipe. They're on top of the Y-pipe. Hardest part is usually getting to it. Next hardest is scrapiing the gaskets from the elbows and manifolds.

I did the flappers on a 5.7 a few years back and I did not have to remove the risers. If I remember correctly it was only the rubber exhaust elbow bellow that needed to be removed to give me access to the flappers.FB95 ,you can surely do the job,its easy.Charlie

I don't know about easy, it was a little bit of a booger to push the bellows back far enough to clear the riser, when i did the job last summer. It was easier putting them back on though. I certainly wouldn't pay to have it done. JMHO

I have a rubber boot leaving the riser, a hard elbow, then another rubber boot to the "Y". Are the flappers located in the elbow, or are they down in the "Y"?

On that motor they should be at the top of the y pipe. When you take offthe second rubber bellows you should be looking right at them. You will need to tap out the shudder post from the top of the y pipe.Charlie

You will want to make sure that the flappers are not missing as they tend to fall down into the 'y' pipe and plug up the exhaust. If they are missing you can sometimes fish them out through the exhaust port with the outdrive removed.

I took the clamps loose, and tried to get either of the rubber boots to move. No dice! It looks like I may have to remove the riser in order to get SOMETHING to move.
Is there any "trick" to create play in the hard elbow to get one end out of the boots? (I've already tried introducing a soap solution and freeing up the boots).

There is a tool called a hose hook. It will free up the hose and you then slide it back. Soaping it probably ended up gluing it on.

"any "trick" to create play in the hard elbow to get one end out of the boots?"
Yep, called a razor knife......
Why don't you invest a little time and a couple bucks, and buy new riser/manifold gaskets. Whatever footage you need to make new rubber exhaust hose, new boots. Now, take a razor knife and slit the hose wherever needed (watch what yer doing, and wear thick leather gloves) and trash it. Inspect you manifolds and risers. Do what ya need to the flappers, new hose/boots and your good to go. That stuff is NOT forever, as the manifolds.

Remove all clamps, from riser, elbow and Y pipe.
Get a spray can of WD 40 with the red plastic tip.
Work a flat blade screw driver under hose, spray oil along
screw driver. Keep moving driver around hose - keep
spraying - take longer driver and do again - wiggle and
pry. Do this on all hoses. You will be able to slide
Y pipe hose down on y pipe, and remove elbow and hoses.

Sand elbow and inside of hoses, and grease everything,
and reinstall. There is no reason to remove manifolds or
risers. I have done this over 100 times.
