Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

Yeeww, Boy,.......

I just did 1 of these last year,+ Didn't run into This Problem.........

I just looked in the Parts Listings,......

It appears the the 1 pc. manifolds use Y pipe part # 807130A7,.... Which is NLA......

For the 2pc. manifolds it lists Y pipe part # 807130A4..........
It appears to have a Lesser Angle,....

Like I said,... I Didn't have this problem,... I Don't Know which Y pipe was on the boat I did.........
I also Can't think of a "Work Around" just Yet........

You Might Possibly have to Swap Y pipes........Dunno....

Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

i'm thinking?? of the possibility of cutting the riser narrower nipple off with a sawsall(and several blades)back to the 4" diameter then use a 4" galvanized 90 pipe fitting with a short 4" nipple into the y pipe. i might give me just enough room.

My marina manufactured custom fittings for tough conversions like this. Ask yours. If you take off that rubber coupler, you might get yourself more room to lessen the impact of the bend that you would have to introduce into the connecting piece.

That's where the Water,+ Exhaust are going to be Mixing,.......
You might possibly be setting yourself up for a Reversion Problem,.. If you do That........

Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

why can't i just use a section of 4" marine corrigated exhaust hose from the outer hub of riser all the way to the Y pipe. it may not last as long, but would be a lot easier. i don't like whats there now.

Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

You have more stuff wrong than you think. You have 3" elbows, and 4" risers------ That aint gonna work at all. Where you have the hose clamped to on the riser is in the wrong place. That section should be inside the elbow with a 4" hose connecting the two. The Y is definitely at the wrong angle. What you need is the proper Y, proper elbows, and proper hoses to make it work. The chances of it working the way you have it in this picture are ZERO.

PS: Do you have a Mercruiser service manual, if so, what manual? Number 18 ???

Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

You might get some luck from looking at this. This is the shortest riser I could find. Its 5.7 V8, but the risers might work on 4.3. You could toss the coupler, take the 8" exhaust hose that comes in the elbow kit and connect the elbow to Y pipe, and get another foot of hose to cut to length and connect to riser. Heres some numbers, but I doubt, or just don't know, if the riser would fit that GLM manifold. I could give you the dimensions off one of my gaskets if ya want, to see if the bolt holes and passages look the same. You will still get a bend where that coupler is in the pic, but not nearly as severe. And if you have a water line issue and need those high risers, think you can get some risers blocks in there for even more wiggle room.
Sierra P/N
Risers 18-1999
Elbows 18-1992-1

This is a set of 3in merc risers. Without the extra length water guide they may work. They will bolt on the GLM manifolds.

Re: having trouble installing riser and bend not enough room

You can try going to the 3", but with the Vortec engine you may end up with water being sucked back into the exhaust at low rpm due to valve overlap. With the extra length of the 4" risers, the problem was less.
