Is it OK to paint the outdrive now and have it sit until spring? Or does the anti-fouling paint loose its effectiveness if not put in the water?

Not cosmetic.....I keep the boat in the water (salt). Paint is to prevent growth.

If you are painting it with anti-fouling, it depends on the brand you're using. Check the lable on the can, it should tell you.

trog looks like you don't run that thing much over idle, or very often!
Here we get barnicles up in the pivot housing even with antifouling paint.

Re: Painting Outdrive

the stuff does come off easy with brush.. and yep a good blast at WOT does take lot of it off.. its a freshwater river boat.. 6 mph speed limit.. i have to make sure no one is about before it gets a blast.. he he..

i do the bottom of the boat once year that stays clean.. the drive takes only about two weeks moored up to get like that.. again once year i give it a good scrub down and retouch any bits on the drive with damaged paintwork.. the crud dosnt seem to do much harm and cos the boat stays in the water u dont see it very often..

the antifoul bottom paint i use tends to suggest u should keep it well away from the drive.. not sure how valid this is thow..

trog

There are very few AF paints that can be used on alum. outdrives.None that I know of will be effective if you paint it now and put the boat in the water until the spring.

Interlux sells Trilux for alu but you are supposed to use the Primocron base coat first. The issue is they stopped making the tin based paints which worked well for alu. Conventional bottom paints have copper which will cause corrosion (galvinism) of alu. The Trilux does have copper in it but using the Primocron insulates the alu from the copper, and the copper used is different than that used in regular bottom paint.

Wow Trog, that looks terrible. That's some murky water around there.

We have a few lakes in Arizona, but they look cleaner than that.

6mph limit.... arrrgggghhhhhh! I couldn't handle that.

Re: Painting Outdrive

Be very careful when using antifouling paint on your drive...Do Not use copper based bottom paint...it will turn your drive to mush...also, if your hull is painted with antifouling paint, you must leave an inch and a half gap between your bottom paint and your drive...per mercruiser...this prevents any electrical continuity between your drive and the bottom paint...which turns your aluminum drive into one big anode protecting the bottom paint...in other words, your drive will dissolve...

Ya might try Transducer paint too, a little cheaper, might work on Aluminum OK. I sprayed my SS trim tabs, with no adverse problems
