Removing harmonic balancer

The motor is a omc i/o 120 hp 4 cylinder 153 cubic inch. I'm trying to gain entry to the camshaft. I've removed the front plate of the harmonic balancer. What I don't understand is their a bolt that holds the remaining hub/housing on their, will the remaining part slide out with a puller? One would think that their should be a bolt holding the remaining part on their. Looking at the remaining hub, in the center I see a round part that is concaved. It kind of looks like a bolt, but is quite large and round, but has a hole in it. I tried putting a big socket (greater than 1 in.) and the socket would not fit onto it because of a lack of space. Also, assuming that I don't need to remove any thing more, when I tighten down the puller the motor turns over. Basically, the puller is useless, any tricks on getting off stubborn harmonic balancer off.

Are you sure you have a harmonic balancer and not just a pulley attached to the hub? What year engine is this?<br />There isn't a center bolt on many of them (Maybe all of the 120's) the center hub is just pressed on.<br />Are you using a 3 bolt puller attached with the 3 bolts to the hub and pushing on the center (Crankshaft)? If so, just remove the starter and use a screwdriver to hold the flywheel from turning while you tighten the center puller bolt.

Don S,<br /><br />The engine, I believe is a 1972. I only call it a harmonic balancer, because the book references that name in the camshaft removal section. Also, I don't know how differentiate between the two, but if I had to guess I would think it is the Har. bal., because it is below the water circulation pump and in the presumable location of the crank shaft. The manual that I use is a seloc omc stern drives from 64-86. Your probably right about it being pressed on, that is what I originally thought, then I had trouble getting it off and thought their might be something holding it on their. I’m using a type of puller you describe above. I'll try what you suggested about the screwdriver in the flywheel. <br />Thanks, BB

While it is on the crankshaft, it's not a harmonic balancer. Just a pulley. The hub does just press on. Ayuh,.....<br /><br />I Think the 153cids had Just a Pulley,+ Hub.....<br /><br />The 181cids have a Harmonic Balancer,..... <br />The Balancer is Much Larger than the Pulley Hub you're trying to get Off.....
